Budgeting Your Time

5 posts in this topic

In terms of budgeting, we most likely think of budgeting our money. It is just as important to budget our time, if not more so. Unlike money, time is something we can never get back after it is spent. In the past few weeks I've been recording the number hours doing productive work that will make my dreams become a reality. It turns out I spend between 40 to 50 hours in a week doing tutorials and sharpening my 3D animation skills, doing client work, meditating, etc. What's amazing about this is it ties back to Leo's episode about how awareness alone is curative. In the process of just documenting my time spent productively, it has forced me to get more done in the process. Inversely, you could also record the amount of time spent fucking around (scrolling through instagram, socializing, gaming, etc). This is something that has worked for me in the past few weeks and I'm going to continue to do. Give this a try and see what happens. I'd be curious to hear reports and feedback on this technique I've developed.

yea i think being mindful of what you are doing and seeing the relevance in all things is a great idea. even the time you spend fucking around on instagram theres no reason why you cant do that until it becomes harmful. by being mindful of the implications of certain activities you can properly budget without oppressing your feelings or parts of life itself. understanding you cant just "work" 24 / 7 or even refering to your creative passions in 3d animation as work i find personally it distracts me and creates an ego backlash and creates less inspired and more dogmatic work which doesnt come from a true expression of creativity and more from a sense of not being present in the beauty of what you are actually doing and being satisfied with it.

There's no value judgement, just recording how you spend your time. If at the end of the week you feel satisfied with the way you've spent you're time, great. This is more of a practical side of personal development. A lot of artists struggle with deadlines so this can be an important tool to use to become more focused and disciplined.
