I've heard people say that we aren't our body just because we can't perceive ourselves, but enlightened people say that the universe created us to perceive itself through us. So what's the truth? Can something perceive itself or not?

Perceiver IS perception. It's all one substance manifesting and experiencing itself, arising and disappearing like a wave to the ocean.
