Today they closed all the dental offices in my state, so they don't use the masks and gloves that are needed by the hospitals. They were instructed to take their medical supplies to the nearest hospital after closing (I doubt any did that).

Um, hope I don't need a dentist any time soon! ?

One amazing thing about this is that is adds an argument for Unconditional/Universal Basic Income.

Another is that the dysfunction of our healthcare system is coming to the forefront.

Things have never looked better for a Universal Basic Income.

I think the panic about this virus is blown out of proportion.

It's actually much lower than 2-3% because there's a large number of undetected cases.

In Italy it is almost 12%, the thing is that there are allot of people sick who do not get tested, but question is if people who die untested get tested. Also do not forget that it can take up to month for someone to die from this virus, which means death tool is way behind cases of infection being registered.

One is for sure, it is still huge number for deaths for people tested and to my knowledge every specialist says that it is more dangerous then seasonal flue.

This was suppose to be the "good" of the virus thread, oops, seems I haven't done very well, my bad.

This post really isn't bad, it's just data on how thing are these days.

Where I live are two Walmarts, they both had their highest grossing day yesterday of their histories, one did $600,000 and the other $400,000.

I guess people were freaking because of the news that there might be a nation wide lock down. Still seemed pretty odd to me since we don't have a known case within 300 or 400 miles of us yet. We did have a traveler come through that died here but nothing since.

They were out of what I was after, but I didn't care as it was entertaining to look at how the store was left at the end of the day.

Guess they were thinking like this:

It's my Apocalypse and I'll freak if I want to....freak if I want to....

Lol, good one P I      Walmart's stock just made a new all time high today....there....that's some news that is not all doom and gloom...

People in Utah probably really have their freak on today as they got a 5.7 earthquake this morning. Largest since 1992, so they are likely freakfull.

I guess it's good practice for the future when another virus spawn which is way more deadly and acts quicker

I'm slowly realizing the long-term impacts of this whole COVID story and sometimes it scares my little ego (of course). I know this is being exaggerated already in the news, but it still represents a survival threat and huge challenge for society.

Personally I'm in a very privileged position where material resources are not a problem and can still focus on my studies and interests. Because of this I'm able to look for opportunities and to ask myself some important life purpose-related questions that I usually don't have the perspective to consider, like: What role do I want to have? How can I be of service to society and how can I provide the most value? What does society need the most right now and in the next decade? And so on.

These kind of events can be opportunities to create meaning and causes to fight for, which I find really empowering. They wake us up from our complacency and laziness and get a bit more engaged with life. They represent a chance to connect more with our loved ones and unify your community, to slow down, be more compassionate, appreciate what we have, and realize how temporary it is.

Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that the ( Ordinary ) flu kills 290,000 to 650,000 people per year.

So far this virus has killed a VERY small portion of that number, and since we are working hard on a cure ( especially here in Australia ), I highly doubt it will surpass that number.

The coronavirus is much much more dangerous than an ordinary flu virus. As well, the numbers you cite are collective for ALL ordinary flu viruses. Those figures include thousands of different viral strains.

Working hard on a cure is just one piece of the puzzle. We also must work hard to increasing testing, increase the amount of protective clothing, increase the number of hospital beds, increase disinfectants, increase public education on the virus and voluntary personal behavior changes to help "flatten the curve".

@Vxvxen It's amazing to observe the effects of human impact and how aspects of nature thrive better without humans. From the perspective of much of nature, human "shelter in place" is like a wonderful vacation.

Doesn't really make a difference, they all kill around half a million people every year, making panic over this disease unnecessary.

If anything that makes my point more valid, as you can't cure all of them, it's basically impossible with our current technology

@SamueLSD ...it’s not unnecessary. If people don’t make it a big deal, the whole planet will be infected. Look at the this article about the Spanish Flu. You have to lock down the city to contain the spread. It’s very simple and only unnecessary for people that don’t see what’s coming. Soon you’ll want to hide that comment. ?

@TylerJ @unicity It woke me up like a train flying past the third floor window. I have never been that scared. It made me fell so small and fragile, like energy forcing itself into my reality and doing whatever it wanted. I can still hear and feel the rumble and shaking. We lost power for a few hours, but besides a couple heavier aftershocks it has calmed. In the back of my head I’m waiting for the world to shake again. Especially crazy to wake up like that with a Pandemic outside. There was an Angel Statue on top of the Salt Lake Temple that dropped its trumpet... Almost made me pick up the Bible again ?

How they calculate is not accurate, they put people who just have symptoms that can be from allot of things without any test on virus, people with pneumonia which fair enough can be from flue, but again can be  from other things too, the thing is that actual tests and people who have died with them done is very small, vaccines is huge business.

It is not about panic, it is about keeping society working, if everyone gets sick in short period of time, it will make chaos, it is not your seasonal cold where now and then someone goes of on sickness.Numbers might seem small for now, but it is just because it has infected relatively small population as of now and because of  procedures in place to slow it down.

Remember it can take up to month do die from this virus and month ago it barely started to poke in other countries, don't take it lightly, people in risk groups have all right to be afraid, especially considering how contiguous it is.
