One Neurosis To Deal With

9 posts in this topic

I am kind of becoming addicted to read self help/self development books, after finishing one book , i need another , so and so , if i want a book , I would do every possible effort to get it , and if I love the book i am reading , i will read whole day , ignoring my studies , how to deal with this, I am just in initial phase of self development , every thing comes my way looks so beautiful , I am aware I am getting attached to it , how to deal ?

@jes use the addiction against itself, read more material pertaining to finding that detachment from everything you depend on, also try doing nothing when you have the urge to read more, you'll still be doing a related activity but the power comes in that it grounds you, focus on the actions related to PD rather than stuffing yourself with theory and it might just help you, I get this addiction from time to time too

btw is there anything specific you're always reading about e.g. emotions? It might indicate a lack you're trying to fill or find answers to

@jes

Hi jes,

Dependency on self-help books unfortunately is not a part of the initial phase of self development.  I noticed a dependency around asking very basic questions that you could either research yourself, or wait for an answer to come internally.  For example, a lot of your meditation questions seemed to me that your question would have been answered by itself if you had allowed yourself to practice for a little while.

Dependency has a habit of shifting from one stimulus to another without much discrimination.

I recommend you stick to one book at a time.  One meditation technique at a time and go at it with a serious and respectable intent toward developing a small degree of self-reliance.

I'm happy to help anybody with any sticking points they have after successfully showing that they have indeed put in some special effort into their self-actualizing goals.

There are plenty of people on here in need of help who are genuine about this resource, help and advice is also a limited resource too.

Mal

@jes

I hope my observation proves helpful for you in developing some more of your own capacity to observe yourself in action

Limit the time you read self-help books to 2h-ish a day and Instead add time:

A) writing stuff down ( keep a notebook and pen while you read and make notes!)

B) actually applying the things you learned in real life / checking if the stuff you read really benefits you

This way you won´t be prone to exploit self-help as a form of procrastination...

Stop reading for awhile , remember, sometimes you have to make one step backward !

@jes It better to understand completely 5 books, than understanding very little of 50 books.
