Fashion vs. Judgement

5 posts in this topic

As I'm doing the 30-day challenge of no criticism, I'm becoming more aware of what I usually tend to judge, and my criticism to most of the things reduced a little bit. However I can't avoid falling into the trap of fashion's judgement .

The way fashion functions is through judgement ; outfits, hairstyles, makeup and other fields in fashion are based on specific standards which are being used for making judgements. Fashion is affecting society and culture in a  materialistic way. For example social status and personal traits are mostly judged by the person's outer appearance, and even first impressions rely largely on people's styles. There's nothing wrong with that, however criticism plays a very big role in all of that, and criticism can reach a very limiting level.

Do you think there can be a way of including fashion in day-to-day life without being critical or judgemental?

You're not wrong per say, but you are speaking of a particular form of fashion, which is not by all means the entirety of what exists out there. It's true that the industry is currently very focused on profit, but it's like calling the cinema "meaningless blockbusters". If you want to experience fashion as a form of an expression, as art, you have the opportunity to do so.

@Ero

I mean by fashion as a style that is popular particularly in cloths, makeup, hair, etc. at a specific time.

I think that there's nothing wrong with fashion per say. But following it and being affected by it is limiting especially if the person is depending on judgement for meeting the satandards fashionistas, models and celebrities depend. The point is that this judgement wouldn't only be contained in the fashion-following, it's going to expand to include all facets of life (unconsciously), until the person would become very critical.

Is there any way to follow fashion without being judgemental? (I actually couldn't stop my judgement when I was including it in my life)

It doesn't happen overnight. You need more time/practice, that's all.

Years of unconsciousness usually require months, if not years, of active awareness in order for it to get neutralised.

@Lento that's true. I got to be giving myself more time probably, as awareness requires time to be effective.
