Today, https://80000hours.org/articles/career-planning/ became the new foundation for my long-term career plans.

• Long-term career options
  • Global problem areas I want to tackle
  • Types of role or skill-types that I will be using in the long term
    • Researcher, entrepreneur, artist, ...
• Next steps
  • What I will be doing for the next 2 years

Broad long-term options give me a general orientation which helps me choose next steps. They are specific enough to give directions, but are not so narrow that I have to change them often. I have a few high-impact long-term career options in my long-term career plan. I can try them and settle with one eventually.
