Elton John wrote this ballad for his buddy John Lennon who got murdered on December 8th 1980. I was 13 years old.  I remember seeing the news about the assassination on tv after school that day. It made me both sad and furious.

There was a record heatwave and drought in Arkansas earlier in the summer that year. It was the first time I ever saw our creek run dry.
