How To Stop Daydreaming And Get Distracted

4 posts in this topic

hi guys.

So I have this problem that I think robs me of soo much of my time and makes me quite depressed. Day dreaming.

So...I dont know when this started..I guess everyone daydreams when they are a kid.

In middle school I was hardcore addicted to video games. That was my only life purpose.I would not care about friends or doing other activities.

When I couldn t play video games,I actually started imagining playing

And for some reason I was too scared of talking to the girls I liked(which were not in my class) so I ended up fantasizeing FOR 4 GODDAMN YEARS about having a relationship with them without actually talking to them a SINGLE word.

Curently I find myself daydreaming quite a lot. So if I am in bed,I am thinking of having a conversation with someone. If I am at my desk doing homework I often get distracted by some thought after like 20 mins, and start  walking around the room having a conversation with  someone.(this someone is  a REAL person but the conversation is just in my head). Sometimes ,one thought arises when I watch a video or read a book,so I pause the video to start walking around the room for 15 minutes having some bs adventure or conversation in my head.

When I listen to music this goes to another level. Like 95% of time I imagine something related to the song I listen and picture myself as the main character.

I think this daydreaming is also the cause of my obsession with the girl who rejected me a few months ago and I still have trouble getting over it.The harsh part is when the ilusion meets reality. It makes me freaking misserable.

It s like I am addicted to these imaginary stories that happend with real people. And I get verry engaged in the  stories.I start walking around , talking out loud,a lot of mimicing and body language.

How do I stop doing this?

I started meditating a week ago but can t do more than 25 minutes mostly because my legs start  hurting. I sit on the floor, crossed legs,no back support.

You started meditating, that's good because it should help with distractions. To me, I had very similar problem(maybe not to this extent but reaaaly close ^_^), and what helped me is being aware of these made up conversations everytime they pop up. Everytime this distracting thought arises, you notice it, and try to tell yourself that it's not real, it's only imagination. It will be hard because your mind got used to these thoughts( I know from my experience that it's not easy). I still have thoughts like these but I try to be aware that they are not real and they won't help me in anything in life.

Also, you should start to love yourself as you are, because these thoughts often are result of bad self-esteem. Start to love yourself and all your flaws.

Wish you luck!

I had no ideea these thoughts may be caused by low self esteem. I have quite  a big problem with self esteem. I ll try to work that out. Thanks for your reply.

@hi guys First of all Congratulations ! You're aware of it ! It's the first step.
Here's how I dealt with the issue. First, I simply noticed myself in my "cycle" whenever I would get there. Then, I would keep going while paying attention to my body and my thoughts while doing it, this step is critical, it creates mindfulness, and it makes me happy. And then lastly I would just stop and re-direct my attention to something I want to pay attention to, like my vision of the future, or something I just read about, or whatever is important right now. Over time, the amount of daydreaming I had been doing greatly reduced.
