Getting Rid Of Ego

10 posts in this topic

Hi,
about last two months I have been thinking about ego. As days pass it seems to me that really ego does totally everything in my life. I started to criticize it. Nowadays I rarely say something rude I am trying to get rid of prejudice. But about last two weeks I found out that there is deeper level of ego that seems to be happy when I am trying to get rid of the shallow one. It feels like sometimes I am above other people which is kind of disturbing and I am trying to kill this thought since it does not seem right to me. Is there any way to stop boosting ego without enlightenment?

I started to meditate almost two months ago and I want to extend it for 30 minutes now. From what I understand finally meditation could lead to ego-death right? I am fifteen years old teenager which is just good right? (That I have started so soon).

Remember that everything that you are doing is thinking,You do not want to stop the thoughts(you can't do it anyway),you want to leave in peace with them,and for that you need mindfullnes skills,like this way:i have this kind of thoughts sometimes,like i am superior ,but when i observe that happening i realise that those are just thoughts,there is no one really to be superior,value do not exist,it is just a projection of your mind.If you ask me,you sould do more mindfulnes and ''do nothing'' meditation

Thanks for the input, I will watch the video as soon as I have time.. With the meditation, right now I am doing 20 minutes the technique described in "how to meditate deeper (1st level right now)" and "no bullshit guide" which is named "do nothing" right?

@Dragallur
I guess what you feel now is called self-conceit. Personally for me it was always difficult to meditate because of low blood pressure. I almost instantly fell asleep and could be asleep for all meditation time) even though I was sitting) That`s why I used to do a lot of intellectual work, including self-inquiry. In fact you don`t have to be nice to everybody, what you need is understanding why others are acting in a certain manner or saying something unpleasant to you, what are their real intentions by saying or doing something. It can help a lot. In such way you can create a natural positive reaction, instead of artificially created by your ego. And if there are things that you can`t understand (about others) you just need to accept people as they are, since there definitely are some reasons, which made them to act in a certain way.
I would say that ego can`t die, its like some kind of software. But experiencing that you are not only your thoughts creates some kind of distance from it. However, you need to be well-prepared for that and to have certain knowledge, otherwise such experience will create a lot of stress to you. Take your time.

Thanks for feedback!
What I mainly meant by the rudeness was that I stopped saying bad stuff to people just because it would not do any good to them or me, either I ignore them or I try to understand them. But those are great thoughts from you I will think about it more ;)

You say "certain knowledge" what exactly do you mean by that? I plan to try all the other Leo's meditation techniques always for one month so I find the best.. I read from your post what you mean by this stress.. do you think that reading some books and joining the community/thinking about it may prepare me? (Does not it take years to get to that stage?)

@Dragallur You are welcome)
I don`t know. Honestly. I didn`t expect it can happen to me so soon. I guess I made quite a big progress with self-inquiry and while meditating I desperately craved for a change, since I had a depressive episode. At one point I had a feeling that something may happen, but then I was like `No, you need years of practice to get a remarkable shift`. But it happened. Basically I wanted to obtain healthier mind condition. Maybe that`s why I didn`t do any research about such experiences.
At least you need to know about mind attacks after such experience or you will have a really hard time. It will struck with everything you were cultivating (rationalism, for example, or strong trust in science or anything else).

Yes, there are different levels of ego and these can contradict each other. Just to be clear, the one trying to get rid of the prejudice and criticizing the ego IS ego. It is just a different level of ego. What's happened is that you have broken through to another level, and you have started to see some of the lower level ego, more is likely to be seen. There really is nothing you need to do get rid of this lower level of ego, but this will gradually fade away by itself once you get aware of the different ways it works.

as @All_Around_Me said. Take your time. No need to rush things. You have your whole life ahead of you and all these development stages have their place and time.

This is good point. I have been struggling with this for some time since I was born in very rational family. After watching some of Leo's videos I started to question this and right now though I want to be a scientist, I take it as that science is awesome tool but it may only take you so far. I have not yet resolved this completely, still very rational but understand that there is more to reality.. also I would not be probably meditating otherwise since I had hard time believing in enlightenment..

Cool, this sounds very interesting. I will definitely share these thought with my friend. I have been basically discovering ego with him which made it so much easier!

Thanks for your thoughts, lets see how it will work in next years :)

@Dragallur I was comfortable with relying on rationality and science, but yes, there still were a lot of gaps.
And yes, reading books, watching topic-related videos and joining the community are very helpful. (I forgot to mention this)
