Death Rattle

27 posts in this topic

For those that dont know it's quite common, I've been told, to get what's called the "death rattle" when one is in the process of dying. I've just never heard it before, until today.

Ive been in home care as a RN for 12 years, but never had a patient actively dying upon my arrival. A sweet little old lady 88 yrs young who has "angel like" clear blue eyes you can see her kind soul in.

..Not sure why her son didnt call me sooner, but he reported to me that she had not eaten or drank much since my visit last week and yesterday refused to get out of bed any longer.

During my visit she fell asleep and then I heard it, the death rattle. Her son said, shes had this phlegm build up sound in her throat. I didnt put two and two together until I heard it. I then changed gears and knew I had to convince him to call in hospice (end of life nursing). That is if she lives through the night.

Oddly enough, there was this calm, peaceful vibe in the room and he didnt take much convincing at all and called hospice after I left. I feel honored to have been allowed to be a part of her life ..and death.

Perhaps I'll be a hospice nurse someday?

Could you explain death rattle a bit more? I realIze it’s tough to describe a sound but where was it coming from, the throat?

Do you recommend patients get that phlegm out of their system?

The  “death rattle,” occurs when mucous and saliva build up in the patient's throat due to the respiratory system slowly shutting down.

It's a crackling, wet sound that is heard with each breath, usually when sleeping. Theres really no sound like it. Ppl have described it to me many times and when I heard it, I just knew thats what it was.

Patients aren't usually bothered by the build up of secretions that caused the rattle, for some reason, including this patient. It was her son that was concerned.

So, no, they dont need to clear it. Unless, they do become distressed. They can try to cough some up, but it will just return.

@Anna1 interesting, appreciate the detailed explanation. What an experience.

Something interesting I learned recently, when animals stop eating or drinking they are in full recovery mode, they don’t always survive, but the body is trying its best to use all the energy it has to heal rather than for food digestion. I always assumed that when animals and even humans stop eating that means they are on their way out but that’s actually the most optimal state for the body to focus on recovery and in this state there’s a chance to survive, miracles happen

The reason I asked about the mucus or build up of secretions is that from a body chemistry standpoint, excretion of gunk through skin and orifices is the body’s way of cleaning the lymphatic system in an attempt to get it flowing again

@Anna1  My mother once mentioned being in the presence of a family member that was passing and heard the death rattle. I could see how fluid could build up in the lungs while the throat relaxes and closes causing something like sleep apnea.

On the topic of death, here's a good one from Sadhguru.........

It’s all according to the international school of detoxification, it’s something I’ve been diving into for weeks because it’s amazing and a simple way to approach health. The personal benefits I’ve experienced have also blown my mind and given me an even deeper appreciation for what this man does

I've not heard this, but I'm not an animal expert either, hehe.

In the case of many older or sick humans though...not eating and drinking can be a sign of impending death, depending on age and diagnosis. Such was the case with my patient in my post. Hospice uses this criteria as well, as a sign of body shut down.

Yeah, it was a buildup actually in the throat from what I could tell. Maybe also very upper bronchial passages. Terminal secretions they are called I think...

@Anna1 Just to throw this out there since your in the medical field-

All the recent findings about how bad vaping is. I tried vaping about 4 years ago and quit after about 3 weeks. When I would lie down at night I would get a rattle. I looked into it on a vaping forums and there is a name for it- "Pop Corning". That's exactly what it sounded like. Like pop corn popping in the back of my throat every time I breathed in and out. Yikes!

So, I watched about 1/2...I think I got the gist tho.

So, he thinks humans should just eat fruits, yes?

I also get what hes saying about acidosis, not sure I fully agree, but I dont feel the need to debate it :)

A bit about me, I was diagnosed at 21 with an autoimmune disease called M.S. it gave me problems for years, but has been in remission for awhile now. My last MRI about 3 yrs ago showed that the brain lesions were shrinking, why?? I have no freaking clue! Didnt change my diet, just starved the disease of attention, basically, that's it. Finally, after years of injections I refused all treatment and barely speak of it, except here and there. So, if the doctor is correct what's reversing my autoimmune disease if my diet hasn't changed? I dunno.

I had the opposite experience. After smoking for many decades, I switched to vaping and vaped for 5 years straight. I vaped a lot too. My lungs cleared. I had no cough or secretions from vaping, but I didnt like being addicted to nicotine, so 3 years ago I quit vaping too.

* but the vape I used was locally made and pure, with only 3 ingredients, plus flavoring. Not sure if that's the difference?

I went with Ocravis infusions but haven't had an MRI since starting it 18 mos. ago. Can't say I'm any worse that I can tell.

That could have made a difference.

@Anna1 good good good. I don’t wish to debate either, all trust should be in our experience. I’m no expert (yet). Here’s an article you’d enjoy:

i enjoy Robert Morse’s Facebook group free to join and ask questions, lots of experience there, and his book: the detox miracle source book

I remember you have it also.. I'm glad you're no worse and treatmentis helping.

For me, all treatment (Avonex 12 yrs, then 2 other injections) gave me side effects and effected my quality of life. So, I stopped.

@DrewNows Dang, that diet is super strict. No heated, cooked or seasoned foods.

Do you do it?

@Anna1 Injections suck IMO and I've done a few of them.

Haha, suck is right! If it's not flu-like symptoms, then its large lumps under the skin.
