Any advice for finding a true spiritual teacher near me?

I feel called to reach out to someone in person to help me make sense of this whole awakening process, but so many spiritual mediums seem at face value a circus act for people who aren't truly seekers. Is there any reliable means to find someone or is it up to trial and error? Thanks.
