Does Anyone Else Always Doze Off During Meditation?

5 posts in this topic

I've tried different times of day, different chairs, different methods (do nothing, mindfulness), eyes open and eyes closed, and no matter what I do at about the 5min mark I start dozing off and the remainder of the session is spent fighting sleep. I have a very regular sleep schedule going to bed and waking at the same time every day and I generally feel well rested upon waking. The only thing I haven't tried is standing while meditating, the reason being, I work at a stand-up desk for 10+ hours a day and my feet could do without any more use.

Anyone else struggle with this? Any ideas?

Hm, I experience this problem when I try to meditate without my pre-sitting routine which includes: cold shower, drinking cup of water/tea, stretching legs + 2 to 5 planks for 30 seconds. When I do this I can stay alert for 1 h and endure strong determined sitting with do-nothing technique.

Edit: Sitting with eyes opened also makes me more alert.

It happens to me all the time now. Still not sure the best method to overcome this.

The trick here is to be very precise w/ your posture. You maybe wanna sit in something like Burmese posture, quarter / half lotus if you can (I can't) and have a straight back. That means, you want to lean a little bit on your knees and push your after a little bit away as if it tried to see the sun. You can look up the Zazen posture, this I found is one of the best ways to sit.

This should help you. Keep your eyes open and look in a 45 degree to the ground / wall or whatever you see in front of you.

I get sleepy sometimes but it is mostly connected with prior activities, like working out.

They want reality, so I give 'em a fatal dosage.

Try adding an hour or two of sleep to your daily routine. You may be overtired even though you don't really feel it in your body.
