Nope. He actually WAS enlightened all along. The cat is both dead and alive at the same time. You can't know for sure, but you can assume you know, you treat the cat accordingly.

Have you ever bought a drink at McDonald's and you pay for it and they hand you an empty cup and you're like ,"what the actual fuck?"

Then you realize that it's self serve, you have to get your own drink yourself, the soda was there all along, but you needed the cup from them in order to drink it. 

All this spiritual work we do, it's complete bullshit. 

But if you aren't thirsty you won't be willing to pay for an empty cup. 

Or listen to a three hour long video on understanding duality.
