Individuation: Your Goal in Life

9 posts in this topic

Your job in life is it to give your process of individuation space to act, energy, muse, nurish and water it, thus give it potential to express itself.

C.G. Jung writes

Scret societies (or organizations, clubs, gangs, social circles, you name it) and the need for ostentatious secrecy is of vital importance in the primitive level.
for the shared secret serves as a cement, binding the tribe together. Secrets on the tribal level, constitute a helpful compensation for the lack of cohesion in the individual personality which is constantly relapsing into the original unconscious identity with other members of the group.

For even the individuals whose initiation into secrets marked them out in some way, they are obtaining the laws of group identity, where in their case the group is a socially differentiated one ( welcome to actualized.org  Trap or intermediary stage loads of "Self developers/spirituals" are stuck in/ find comfort in)

The secret society is an intermediary stage in the process of individuation.

The individual is still relying on a collective to affect his differentiation for him.

That is: he has not yet recognized that it is the individuals task to differentiate himself from all the others and stand on his own feet.

All collective identities (membership in organizations; support of -isms and so on) interfere with the fulfillment of this task.

Such collective identities are crutches for the lame, beds for the lazy,  shields for the timid, nurseries for the irresponsible. But there are equally shelter for the weak and poor, the buzzm of a family for orphans, a homeport for the shipwrecked, a land of promise for wiry pilgrims and disillusioned, a herd and a safe fold for lost sheep, and a mother providing nourishment and growth.

You see youre loooking for a collective identity, because (Im in some same spot as you regarding life circumstances)
man seeing yourself in full potential and full responsibility is scary. It is. You need courage. Especially when youre already comfortable, you need courage o boy...
Not getting soozed by a collective identity but realizing yourself is a high risk game, and you will probably lose everything but yourself. But once youve found yourself, you can grow your world like a tree grows his branches.

That's half-true. The other half of life is seeking communion with others.

When you become truly individual you will go full-circle and be in communion with all other individuals.

But it is a mistake to think that life is only about being an individual because you will then create a shadow out of community.

@Leo Gura leo i find "insider jokes"/ "group secrets" quite repulsive...maybe it's my resistance against the collective ego

i always wonder, why can't a group be more transparent and let others know what's going on "inside"?

@clouffy For the same reason that you lie and that you are not transparent.

Why don't you post naked pictures of yourself on the internet?

@Leo Gura that said, though, what's the "appropriate"/ "adaptive" way to look at this matter? i have a great problem feeling "belonged" to a group because i question this too much

like, damn, it's another collective ego again,, why belong to it...

too much thoughts like this and it's easy to spiral into depression again

@clouffy I feel the same. I have difficulties finding people that I can be me with. Yet, when I seek out events where I could find people that I could connect with this greatly increases the chances of finding other individuals, who have similar interests and are not too much into wanting to be in a group and rather want to have a good time.

If you get depressed by being around others, at best find some people who you do not feel depressed and who are not toxic, joining some team sport which is not too competitive for instance depending on preference, or going to a meditation center which has a tradition in place, so you could check out the group dynamics and see if it is cult like in advance via reference. Depending on where you are from you could get some great advice here. on the froum P.S I still want to do Hatha Yoga and meet hot girls, but this is just strictly denied here in this city.

You can be in communion without creating a personal identity out of it.

Yes, some degree of collective ego is inevitable and necessary if there is to be community.

Oh yes very true indeed
I´m developing community in me and trying to just let it happen and be with it at the moment but it is a process I really started working on years ago. Slow progress because It is very deep I feel.
