Notetaking IN Books?

13 posts in this topic

Am the only one who feels anal and uncomfortable about taking notes, writing questions, (the idea of even) highlighting, and leaving post-its in books Lol

Do you find these effective when you read books?

I’ve tried going back and forth between a book and a piece of paper and also OneNote but I truly don’t find this effective at all.

No I dont fuck with my books, not cause I'm OCD about it, but I personally never go back and read the notes.  You could just write in a separate notebook a few key things from each chapter and just review it at the end of your reading session to make sure you really cement the key points.  Reviewing just quickly what you learned again is important

I appreciate criticism!  Be as critical/nitpicky as you like and don't hold your blows

For me I find that going back and forth and what not to be extremely distracting.

I remember the one time I dared violate the innocence of my book's clean pages with my filthy diseased ridden ink (half joking... maybe a quarter joking) I actually felt more engaged with what I was reading and I actually remembered the material better and would get a much deeper comprehension out of it because I'm engaged as I'm going through it. It's almost like the difference between listen to just to a teacher for hours and hours and your half engaged at best (or you're me and you're either asleep or you walk out after trying for 2 hours to listen) and then review stuff you weren't even present with the first time vs. being engaged in a dialogue with the teacher and in that process you can hear what they're saying, you can take in their point of view for yourself, you can now raise the questions you've had, etc. but as it's happening.

I just circle around/highlight certain parts and read only them when re-reading fast.

Yup, I was pretty OCD about making any marks in books, too, but got over it eventually. ;)

There's just too much wisdom to write down everything into the note app. That's why I don't use the library anymore and buy my own copies, so I can scribe in them freely.

@Girzo Imagine you have a newborn baby you love and want to take care of. And then you get the idea of drawing on your newborn baby with your pen and highlighter and write on him/her for your selfish agenda... that’s what writing in a book feels like for me LOL

I take notes in my books all the time. I used to do it excessively. I realize that part of it was an anal-retentiveness I picked up from a schoolmate I used to study with. It was a bad habit because it caused me a lot of anxiety and I couldn't absorb material as fast as I was capable since I was too busy adhering to a standard someone else developed for themselves and tried enforcing onto me.

Normally I can read quickly through a book and absorb material and concepts on the fly. It was easy to ace exams. Trying to copy someone else's ways of doing things did me no good.

So, do you carry an iPad Pro and take notes on it? You can write handwritten notes on pdf files on iPad.

It might be good to make summaries after reading books if you want to retain memories.

I enjoy mind-maps from time to time or rehearsing what I wrote down. I don't read much, yet I take notes. I do not use a digital format, often only from time to time. With material I read online I use a digital format.
