Expanding and contracting consciousness

Every (non-dual) teaching is based on the premise of consciousness expanding. How do we know that human consciousness only wants to expand? 

Yet in the universe we see multiple examples of expanding and contracting, like breathing.

Is a contracting conscious awareness possible?

@Rebec If you mean evolution wise, then I’m not so sure that consciousness is increasing. What Leo said about increasing complexity makes sense, but when you consider that the universe has always existed, that theory breaks apart. If the universe existed for infinity, then we should have been infinitely evolved by now. For if you say it takes x amount of years to get this evolved, I can simply grab that from the infinite amount of years we already had. 

But I don’t know really. That’s just a paradox that I thought of. My mind is open to any explanation.
