What are some Ashram/ Monastery Alternatives?

If one is becoming more serious about truth seeking. Is it necessary to join an ashram or monastery?

I would like more time and head space for contemplating/ enlightenment work. I feel that with balancing my current job and life purpose their is little or no time for this work. 

Are there any alternative ways to position ones life to allow space for truth seeking?

Either be satisfied with less money (or move to a cheaper place and work online) or make more money hourly, so that the time required for job diminish

Not necessary but like minded people, good atmosphere, little distraction, respect for the Self and the path and a safe space to awaken,

and making friends, having a place to fall back on if necessary,

ye these places can be very helpful
