Who is it that's supposed to not identify with the ego?

Identification in general is thought transcending it’s own limitation. In most cases this dis-identification has its root in a reaction to being identified. Which still remains identification/attachment/resistance.

Thought in a confused muddle.

This is a great question.  Kudos for thinking of it.

Being is not a knowing or a doing.  No Ego, or as Adyashanti approximates it as "resting as Awareness", is a being.  Being is a surrender to nothingness.  This is No Ego which you might discover when you meditate.

Adyashanti makes a clear distinction between "no ego" (= beingness) and "no self" (=awareness) though. For him these are completely different things.

That's why I used the word approximate.  I'm drawing my comparison not his.  I'm trying to point to being.  I don't follow Adyashanti, I just used one of his metaphors to point to being.

Yeah this one of the big questions. Another way of phrasing it:

If there is no self, who is being tricked by the illusion of self?

How to get to infinity? Divide by zero.
