Fallen down the spiral

10 posts in this topic

So after watching Leo’s latest Spiral Dynamics video (Important insights & nuances), I had some insights into myself.

When I first heard of spiral dynamics, I agreed with the ‘green’ ideas. I followed similar belief systems and ways of thinking in my mind. I believed that intellectually I was at a green level. However, what I failed to see was that I am not a ‘green’ person on the spiral.

I am not green financially

I am not green socially

I am not green emotionally

I am not green physically

I am not green environmentally

I’m probably not even green spiritually.

I haven’t integrated the previous steps in the spiral. I never transcended orange with financial/social/physical abundance. I realised that you can not disown something you never had.

It’s like I’ve been trying to jump the stairs to self-actualisation, instead of walking up them. At the moment, I believe I am still trying to secure my self financially with job security and having my own house. I don’t have many friends, and feel a deep lack of connection with society and others. I am literally on the ‘Safety’ level of Maslow’s Hierarchy, trying to bypass my way to Self-Actualisation, in a desperate attempt to meet my lower needs.

Now I just feel stuck. I’m addicted to passively seeking out new and novel information for a quick fix, that I have no discipline or grit to stick to any of the practises.

Some nice insights.

When I feel desire to quickly skip ahead without practice, I remind myself the journey is the goal.

@Knock You're good! It's all apart of the journey, my advice is to not beat yourself up too much.

You know what you need to do, and thats a great thing.

I wish you the best!

If I fall down the spiral I only fall into individualistic stages, I never fall into collective ones, I am extreme Orange but sometimes fall into Red or even Beige because of my hyper awarness of the body and my addictions, I don't understand collective stages except a little bit of green but this is only because I have a lot of yellow inside and can understand why stage green behaves the way it behaves and the reason is that from my yellow perpective everyone is diffrent and that's great

This is common among green people.

A lot of them didn't fully integrate orange and that's why they stuck.

Be grateful for the awareness you have for the model of SD, you have a map that most green people don't have.

I am a mix of orange and green with some yellow and I understand that I will never be able to fully enter green and yellow without mastering orange.

My strategy is to work on orange with the awareness it is not the final step: I do my meditation and take green workshops and meet with green people and in addition, I take orange workshops and some orange coaching and building my business. Of course, I keep watching actuliezed.org to get more yellow content. Everyone's journey is different, so this is the right way to go in my opinion.

Good luck!

The ego loves to assume it is already fully developed. That conveniently means no more work is required. The ego loves to live in the world of ideals, abstractions, intellectualizations, and soothing fantasies.

You constantly have to give yourself reality-checks in this work. You must be brutally honest with yourself about your deficiencies, limitations, and lack of development. As a rule of thumb you are never as developed or as conscious as you think you are.

It's very easy to listen to advanced stages like Yellow and Turquoise and to assume you're already there just because you intellectually understand those stages or you can picture them in your mind's eye. But that's just imagination. That's not the actual level you're acting from on a daily basis. Most of your daily actions probably stem from much lower levels like Red, Blue, Orange.

A very helpful exercise is to monitor all of your thoughts on any given day and analyze what percentage of your thoughts are stemming from which color stage? How much time do you spend thinking about money, sex, power, fear, selfish needs, dogma, judgment, anger, etc? Probably 90%+ How much time do you spend in systems thinking, metaphysical contemplation, unconditional love, or solving global problems? Probably less than 1%.

@Leo Gura Do you think it's possible to reach turquoise+ in all developmental lines once you're highly developed and worked out your shadow and issues, or do see it as an infinite series of projects that are continuously undertaken but not possible to complete?

I notice consciousness work takes care of a lot of issues automatically and allows you to develop as a person a lot more effectively, but for instance, is it possible to go from stage orange to turquoise in areas such as business and dating without actually having had plenty of hands on experience in those domains and integrated the lessons from the lower stages?

Probably not in practice.

Careful not to get fixated on being perfectly developed. This is just more ego. Just focus on becoming more conscious one bit at a time and enjoy life. Do not make personal development a mission. The mission is to enjoy life, not to be working on yourself forever.

@tenta Less that 0.1%, according to the book ‘Spiral Dynamics.’

"Not believing your own thoughts, you’re free from the primal desire: the thought that reality should be different than it is. You realise the wordless, the unthinkable. You understand that any mystery is only what you yourself have created. In fact, there’s no mystery. Everything is as clear as day. It’s simple, because there really isn’t anything. There’s only the story appearing now. And not even that.” — Byron Katie
