I think I know why "not thinking" leads to increased creativity

Usually when you're thinking you're focusing on one thing. Or a handful of things. This doesn't allow for much creativity. If you want to be creative you have to zoom out & unfocus your mind. And one way to do that is by stopping thinking. But you can also practice shifting your focus between different things quickly. This will be uncomfortable because the mind likes to cling and hold onto things.

Thought is limited to invention (to evolve a thing from past things). 

The self(time) will also act accordingly to what is familiar as its content.

Cultivating, shifting, practicing, (time bound momentum/continuity of self) are all born of the past(thought) and we may see are limited to invention and push creativity further away.
