Theoretically beauty matters because is the nature's language to say " this is top tier genetics" attraction or as you say desire, is the natural reaction to beauty and aesthetics. We are programmed to like and love beauty.

In the other hand, by first hand experience, I can say that when you are in hormonal drugs that the brain produces in the process of being in love beauty is not so important. In some cases, when the being in love disapeared and the relation ended I would watch a picture of the ex, and think: Its impressing I couldnt see how ugly she was, or it didnt matter to me.
