How can I deal with jealousy?

2 posts in this topic

Hello everyone. I have a struggle with jealousy. Let me explain my situation:

I am a student, 14 years old and only a few months ago joined this forum. In my class there a total of 5 good English speakers. 3 are like that because they were raised up in an English country. 2 I don't know how in the world their English is better than mine. One of them is a girl which I have an eye on and you have to understand that all the good English speakers are kind of a friend group. During class, instead of staying they are allowed to leave to go somewhere and write an assignment. Everyone else has to stay in class, but they are allowed to leave. While the teacher explains stuff, I see them come back and forth, laugh and walk away. Can you understand my situation? I have to sit in class while 5 people can leave and write an assignment for the teacher which needs to be entertaining for the teacher to read. Why not me for heaven's sake too? I want to spend more time with her, I don't want to stay in the class and English for me is also very easy. Maybe not compared, to the 3 who are raised up with the language, but certainly to those who aren't. I hate the general fact that there are people who can speak the language far better than me, apparently, and get these privileges. In 7th grade I was the ultimate pro, now in 9th grade I am introduced to 5 new ones and look like an average English speaker.

My friend, who is a very smart boy, told me that we don't need to try to do the same thing they do. He thinks that they probably are doing extra work, instead of skipping what we are doing. I still don't know yet.

The thing with this is: I practically am better with all the other classes compared to them. They have more inadequates than me. In fact, I don't have any. So I actually shouldn't be worried at all. Still, here I am. Worrying about some bullshit. While writing this I realize how stupid this sounds. Sorry if I wasted your time.

You'll grow out of jealousy once you get older, no worries.

You could try to use your jealousy as a fuel for motivation to do better. There's no need for resentment for the ones that are better than you, just let it motivate you. However, your main goal should be to be a good student for knowledge's sake, not to be praised for it. But if it's really bothering you that much, it can be fixed with some extra hard work, and the jealousy to fuel your motivation.

Another more mature way to deal with the situation is to compare yourself with yourself, not with others. Compare your progress to what you were like 1 month, 3 months or 6 months ago, instead of comparing yourself to where others are now. There's always gonna be someone better than you, but that doesn't mean you cannot develop. And who knows, one day you might just be the very best in the field of your study. Sky's the limit. ;)

Combine these two methods interchangeably and see what happens, good luck.
