What are personalities?

5 posts in this topic

We have been told that everyone has a unique personality. Is this actually the case though? Is personality an illusion? a feature of the ego. Or is personality something that each one of us posses? Is personality created, or are we born with it? What are some insights to these questions?

It is a quality or conditioning of the mind/ego

You do not choose it

Whatever personality someone has, was meant to be that way.

So yes, you're born with the personality (which is every changing still) you have... Or destined to have the personality you have.

It is merely idea. However as with all ideas one may get obsessed with it and erroneously take it as a truth.

Please do not pay attention to my empty words if you are following Leo's teaching !!
Sometimes my empty words may appear too negative, too rational, too irrational, egoistical or even like trolling because my path is a non-path and is nothing but deviation and incompatible with all teachings known.

Personality is the same as ego - a collection of ideas, memories and thoughts about 'you' = the ego = personality.

Sadhguru explained it quite well once - Look at what you are, not what you have collected over time. In this case I would equate personality with all that is collected over time.

Be careful that you do not separate thoughts and personality from ego because that is exactly what sustains the ego. The division between 'me' and thoughts is non-existent, but it is exactly what keeps one in the loop by sustaining itself through that illusory division. So ultimately personality is ego.

You see, the reason you want to be better, is the reason why you aren’t. Shall I put it like that?

We aren't better, because we want to be.
