Is it possible to know when you are dreaming?

No shit the other day I was walking my dogs and I sometimes see my old maths teacher on route. 

I had a very quick thought of "Imagine if I see him." For what reason I don't know. I don't even care. 

Surely enough around the corner...there he was. 

I stood there and thought... "I'm actually dreaming, am I dreaming? Fuck this is so real but I'm dreaming!" 

I've never experienced that being awake and it shattered my reality for 20 minutes ?

I loved the movie Inception in this genre. Dreams within dreams, uncertain realities, reality checks. . . it sent my mind spinning

I wrote down some dream time ago, then I stopped because of:

- laziness

- they seem to lead nowhere

- fear of losing touch with reality and becoming mad (when I think back to those dream, they seem so fucking real. Sometimes I can hardly distinguish the dreaming memory from the real memory)

Reality checks works because you remember how your body,time/perceptions works differently in the so called "reality".
You can't have reality checks in a dream that you think is reality, there is nothing to compare it to, and that's the core problem

I've actually got to the stage in my lucid dreaming that I can will something to happen. For example, making a particular body part bigger.

If I try to make something happen I get kicked out of the dream ?
