Does Leo Gura Use Digital Marketing?

9 posts in this topic

Love Leo's channel and am very grateful for the insights it has provided in my personal life.

I was fascinated to see that Leo's got over 20m hits on youtube. When you think about the length of the videos, the non-physical concepts and minimal editing, you'd think that it would be hard to be this popular. But obviously Leo has done a lot of work on himself and has found a way to appeal in a way that is quite unique. I have two questions.

Q1: I'm curious to find out what you think makes his youtube channel so appealing and whether he markets it?

The reason I'm asking this is because people like Leo have inspired me to transition from a traditional career (Civil Engineering) to a vocation I'm even more passionate about - www.bodyknowsbest.net (An online portal to share mental strategies that helped me lose 34kgs).

I'm pleased with the impact the content on the website is making. However, I don't have a background in digital marketing and business. These are the ideas I'm currently considering to reach more people:

  1. Youtube Channel
  2. Twitter - reaching out to influencers
  3. Guest Posts
  4. Content marketing - not just blog posts but also infographics and slideshare
  5. Quora

Q2: I would love your help (even Leo!) for any ideas you may have to grow the outreach over the internet. What do you think is the best way to reach the people who will find the most benefit from the services I wish to provide.

Kern :)

Leo built up his following over a period of years. It takes time and dedication. He's also been extremely consistent with high-quality uploads every week.

@Neill Bolton  Very true. Important to stay dedicated and enjoy the process.

But I'm hoping to learn what else it takes on the side whilst producing great content.

I don't think Leo markets his videos.  The way the video is presented is very professional.  The background is clear, making it less likely for the viewer to become distracted.  He also wears a plain black tshirt to bend with the background.  Additionally just before the body of the video there is a well suited, inspiring jingle, and this synchronizes with an animation sequence which leads up to the logo, all of which have been made to fit the theme of actualization.  Blue, black and white go very well and are pleasing to the eye.  I reckon this alone would have cost a couple of thousand dollars to have done professionally, if not more.  It's all very professional and you know just from this that this guy is serious about what he does.  It gives you confidence in the product before you even see what he has to share.

The content he delivers has been thoroughly researched and is delivered in an effortless manner.  This probably has taken lots of practise and many hours spent practising public speaking and communication techniques.  The whole thing is just a very well rounded package, all the boxes have been ticked.  Obviously the content is the most important thing but he's gone to the effort to make sure there are no rough edges in any aspect of the product.

@Kern Kapoor Yes he does, for example he has an email list and that's an online marketing technique.

An email list is a very good way to build up an online business from the 'backend', it gives you followers so that even if someone stops viewing your content, sending email reminders helps keep people in touch with you

The thing about email lists is it can open up new avenues, for example, when you release new products, you can send it in an email and even give a discount to people on your email list and it entices them to buy your products, you can also do affiliate marketing to your email list where it's relevant to their interests and an important point is that you shouldn't bombard your email list with products but you should break it up with sending them lots of free content like an article about something you wrote so they feel like they're getting some value from being on your email list and that you're not just pushing business onto them

I don't know much about online marketing but i feel it's very interesting, so like I'm planning on I recommend you pick up a book about this because the techniques will really help you

I've been studying Leos marketing for a while now, all I can say is it must take for-ev-er to make and then type out all of the videos he makes. He must work 70 hour weeks.

He also switches things up, like changing the format of his marketing emails. From template to plan text. I'd love to know his results of how that effected his opening rate.

Keep in mind, the email list is comprised of people who've already found Leo. In that context, his email list serves as more of a notification system than a marketing system. I'm very active online and have never seen any "marketing" whatsoever from Leo other than what is on actualized.org or his youtube site. I've seen links to his site from other personal development type sites but they do not appear to be paid advertisements or marketing.

Another thing to keep in mind is "hits" versus time viewed are two different things. My youtube channel has utilities that allow me to analyze the traffic. While I may get a certain amount of views or hits, not everyone watches or views the content or videos in their entirety. This is not to say that people aren't watching all of Leo's videos in their entirety, however the amount of "hits" would not be the number to use when determining the amount of people who are.

On the whole, I would say Leo has built up an exceptional following simply by providing quality content over time. This quality content coupled with consistency has set him apart and above many who aspire to do the same. He talks in his videos about picking one thing and becoming world class at it. he has succeeded in doing so. It's a similar strategy to the Tony Robbins stuff. I've studied Tony for years and have spent personal time with him and see a lot of similarities between Tony and Leo. Not in the spiritual or enlightenment realm, but in the approach to grabbing a hold of something and excelling at it until you're world class.

That comparison was really helpful to know @Brian Greendahl. Thanks for that!

@Sarah_Flagg Leo puts in a lot of work but I'm assuming he would outsource his transcribing though something like fiverr.com

@Saarah Awesome to know about the e-mail list. I'm trying to build mine up. It took me a long time to get to 100 subscribers but when an influencer posted my link on his facebook, it doubled my list instantly. I find it amazing how these things can accelerate your progress, I'm hoping to learn how you can deliberately do things like this.

In the mean time, there will be a lot of process oriented work being put in like @step1 suggests!

Would love to hear from Leo as well! :)
