Is it worth reading metaphysical books by Western authors

6 posts in this topic

My college is highly philosophy-based, and it has a wonderful bookstore chalk-full of philosophy books. They all have wonderfully juicy titles having to do with metaphysics, truth, humanity, values, and yada yada. Based on the titles alone, I want to buy and read all of them. However, I'm also starting to see that 99% of these books are filled to the brim with shit. None of these people know what they're talking about. They're all lost in fantasy land.

My instinct is to disown the bookstore and to do some contemplation/meditation on my own, haha. Self inquiry is king.

However, a small part of me feels like I might be missing out on a hidden jewel in this bookstore. Furthermore, how will I know that these people are actually full of shit until I actually sit down and read through the books?

My dilemma is that I want to dismiss it all as a sham and work on myself by myself. But I'm also aware that I don't actually know if it's a sham or not. I have to go out there for myself and check.

So here is my question: Is it worth reading metaphysical books by Western authors? If so, which ones?

It's Love.

Are they interesting to you? Then the value of them depends on that dude.

Is it worth it in the sense that you want to get somewhere by reading them? Well I would say understanding this urge to get somewhere is a good place to start dude. Good luck?

Yes.  I have a degree in philosophy and it has paid off for me enormously.  It will pay off in your life not necessarily financially though.

We move our physical bodies in a physical world built on mental beliefs.

It's enough to be aware that it's your beliefs you're ultimately looking for, then the process may become clear and easy.

Now if you could identify and process your unuseful beliefs on your own, you wouldn't need books and gurus.

If you can't, books and gurus are good, just choose the very simplest ones that aren't looking to dump even more unhelpful beliefs on you.

Worth? No Thing is worth it at the end of the day, best is Meditation, but from where you are right now you need the experience into what is not important maybe, to really see clearly what you really want.
