SCREW WILLPOWER: ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS by TJ Reeves

1 post in this topic

This video was made about 2 years ago. So, it might not reflect his current level. I think this video provides you with a few quick tips.

  • Daniel Kahneman suggests you have two systems in your brain.
    • A system used for quick automatic actions
      • It makes you make snap judgements about people.
      • An expert uses this to judge the next pattern. If you are a world-class chess player, you use this to calculate the next move.
    • The second system is much slower.
      • It takes in all the information. It takes summary of everything going on. It starts making action.
      • It's really inefficient. There's a lot of bureaucracy.
      • This is where willpower comes in.
  • For most of day, you are on automatic mode. You're unconscious and unaware.
  • When you come across something difficult or unexpected, you need to analyze it, and the second system of brain comes in. It uses a lot of willpower.
  • Most mistakes are made from snap judgements.
  • When things are difficult or overwhelming, we tend to make snap judgements.
  • You want to use your willpower and your slow brain to set up a system for yourself so that you almost can't make a mistake while you are on automatic mode.
    • You got such good habits that you are able to accomplish aggressive powerful things for yourself.
  • It's ok to block websites that are distracting you.
  • If you rely solely on willpower while working hard, you will burn out fast.
  • Using willpower is like using nitrous in a car. You will run out of nitrous really quickly.
  • Focus on distractions. If you find yourself wanting to quit or making excuses for finding new endeavors to pursue, tell yourself that this might be a distraction.
    • Focus on why you want to pursue a potential distraction.
    • Write about it. You may realize where these distractions are coming into play.
    • If you do this, you can stop yourself from going to other distractions.
  • It's not going to be willpower that will help you do these really important big projects.
  • It's going to be ability to keep at it and maintain a proper habit and to remember why and not get distracted.
    • If you have life purpose and nothing else can distract you from it, even if you get bored and think you're not good enough, you're going to keep trying at it.
