Show us your Shopping List!

This is something I really want to know you folk's opinions on; what is the 'Ultimate Shopping List?'

What I mean by 'Ultimate' is both Healthy and Affordable. There are some key nutrients we need as human beings, and I want to know the best products you can get from the supermarket on your weekly grocery shop.

My current list here is inspired from the book Rich Food, Poor Food, by Jayson and Mira Calton:

-Organic, raw milk and butter

-Organic Meat

-Wild caught tuna/salmon

-Local, organic produce (vegetables and eggs)

-Sea salt

-Olive Oil

-Brown Mustard

-Zughetti/Wheat-free Pasta

-White Rice

-Dark chocolate/crisps

-Pure juice not from concentrate

-Herbal Tea

-Organic Porridge

What's your Grocery List?

I think this is a really good topic post! Being a student, it would be great to know the best "bang for your buck" type shopping list.

I'd be quite interested in improving my own shopping list by looking at others.

I have never read or looked into improving my diet, this is just what feels right for me at the moment!

Here is my weekly list:

Protein:

  • Minced beef
  • Two breaded cod fillets
  • 8 pack of bacon
  • 4 x chicken breasts

Fruit/Veg:

  • Bananas
  • Apples
  • Onions
  • Frozen mixed vegetables

Dairy/breakfast:

  • Cream
  • Milk
  • Granola

Carbs:

  • Spaghetti
  • Tagliatelle
  • Ravioli
  • Oven chips
  • White Rice
  • Brown seeded Bread

Other stuff:

  • Honey
  • Activia yoghurts
  • Honey roasted ham
  • Dolmio sauce
  • Tikka masala sauce
  • A backet of biscuits (usually hobnobs - I love them!)
  • Breakfast biscuits for snacks
  • Soreen Malt loaf

So that's roughly what I buy weekly, some things like the pastas carry over into the next week and sometimes meats if I don't eat as much but I train at least 6 times a week with triathlon so I usually do!

I'd love it if someone knows any improvements I could make, Thanks!

Drinks:

What's your budget each time you go shopping? As a student as well I like to keep mine down to £25 a week.

Are you British? If this is the case, which is your favourite supermarket(s)? I go to mostly Sainsburys and sometimes Aldi!

I usually throw some short-grain rice into the rice cooker, sprinkle some wakame rice seasoning on top, and then mix in the natto.

I have never heard of natto :D Gotta try it one day (despite its sliminess ...) I wonder if it also provides you with these useful bacterias for your stomach flora, just like sauerkraut, etc.?

I usually spend around £30 although it varies depending on I need. When it comes to food I feel I shouldn't skimp, the food is turning into my body after all.

I am British and I usually shop at Sainsburys too! What a coincidence.

You're right about £30 being the ideal budget. I went to Sainsburys the other day and it costs me £25 in total, and that was just the basics!

I don't know the exchange rate for other world currencies out there but it seems the equivalent of roughly 30 British Pounds is the ideal amount to spend on weekly groceries.

Looks familiar but I also include nuts and seeds. Almonds are really good all rounders and pistachios are good too and the odd Brazil nut for the selenium. Great fan of chia, flax and linseed too.

Nom Nom!!!

I love to practice intuitive eating, it really helps with getting a balanced amount of precious nutrition and avoiding all sorts of stomach upsets and the like.

Usual items in list:

Kale

Spinach

Broccoli

Cabbage

Bananas

Dates

Onions

Avocados

Olive oil

Flour

Coconut milk

Beans

Chick peas

Potatoes

Beetroot

Mushrooms

Tomatoes

Tofu

Seeds/nuts/nut or seed butter

Wheat noodles

Rice

Hot sauce

Cocoa powder

Coffee

So, a pretty basic and simplistic Vegan diet. Additionally,  I like to make anything like bread, desserts and nut milk myself and buy everything with minimum ingredients and organic as much as possible. :)

I really love cooking in general, so there's a bit more variety than not.

@The Alchemist Go to Aldi if you think you can't afford fruit and vegetables. It isn't organic, but you can get a bag full of fruit and vegetables very cheap. That is the only thing I go to Aldi for.
