Depression after taking psychedelics?

13 posts in this topic

Is this a common occurence for people after taking psychedelics?

I want to try and experiment with psychedelics again, but I don’t want to have any issues in my performance at work if my mood starts to go down.

I have taken mushrooms last year for the first time and very first time ever taking a psychedelic, and had a bad experience. First time was around 1-1.5g, and I walked 20mins away from home to trip by the water by myself, but that wasn’t a good idea. Started panicking and ran home while I was tripping. Not really any decrease in mood after that though. But the next 2-3 times I did it, I tried microdosing it. Then after that I started to get more and more depressed, work performance was bad, I quit that job, and I was depressed for 3 months.

So I just want to ask this question to make sure this doesn’t happen again. If I ever try it again, maybe I will take a month off work and then experiment?

@Outer Saw some video bout some guy talking about the benefits of mico-dosing. He mentioned it was good for his performance in his physical activity, etc. So I went and experimented with that and took it before the gym which didn’t help at all. Made me pretty anxious and felt like everyone in the gym was staring at me

@Outer To experiment, and to further my inner development.

@DrMobius I mean I’m asking the question to figure out where the depression came from. I was also overworked at that job and had issues with co-workers so that could’ve been a huge contributer to the depression.

I don’t know a whole lot about psychedelics but I think it depends. Maybe someone could have a bad trip and then they get depressed, maybe they took it and became conscious of their inner demons or the harsh truth of reality and then they get depressed. A lot of possibilities out there. No matter if they’re “normally healthy” or not. But I do believe “bad trips” are a reflection of someone who is going through something or maybe even just in a bad mood.

@Joseph Maynor Exactly, which is one reason why I would ask this question

Psychedelics are clinically proven treatments for depression.

What you have to understand about depression is that it is self-created. You can get depressed about anything if you put your mind to it. It's all about how you're interpreting reality.

Psychedelics tend to deconstruct reality. This can make you depressed if you are attached to various fantasies, illusions, and neurotic ways of living.

Your prioritzation of work performance over truth and fulfillment is problematic. That's the wrong approach to life. And psychedelics will rudely awaken you to this point. Which might make you feel depressed if you have built an entire lifestyle and identity around it.

Remeber, sometimes to grow you must pass through a dip. Growth is rarely always up, up, up.

You are God. You are Truth. You are Love. You are Infinity.

@7thLetter

It really sounds like you’re really having a rough ride with the psych’s and the two worlds (work) colliding. I can relate. That is not easy.

If you can take a month off, take 4 separate weeks off instead, and space them out a couple months apart. Spend a week in nature, alone. Take the first few days just to decompress and unwind, have simple fun, be a kid again, give your brain a couple days to empty of  ‘serious town’, do something creative, read a uplifting spirituality book, etc. Shed any troubles or concerns, get your spirits up, get yourself feelin good and light.  Then take the trip. Maybe do 0.5g. (Make tea, don’t eat them!)

1.5g outta the gate is the danger zone. It’s enough to shake things up, but not enough to break through.   .5g is good for getting a feel, then 1g or 1.5 depending on how the .5g went for you. 3g - 5g is typically the breakthrough / hero zone.

Highly subjective, but if you can sit alone in a room doing nothing for an hour or two, you’re probably good to go.

Your future trips will be better, no doubt. Honestly, I’m a little jelly of the glorious insights and realizations ahead of you. Lucky fucker. ?

@Leo Gura It’s kind of like trading the stock market, there is no such thing as upward growth 100% of the time.

I understand that trading is an orange thing, but I love it and the complexity of it. And I understand focusing on work performance isn’t the best way to go, but I’m just trying to escape the rat race. This just seems like the best plan for me at the moment. I choose to sacrifice my early years to create wealth for myself, then later on to pursue self-actualization even deeper once I have the freedom. I’m obviously pursuing it at the moment but not as much as I’d like to, due to a lack of time. But that is the sacrifice I’m willing to make. Plus financial freedom has been a goal of mine for 4 years now. I grew up with a lower-class background and still living here with my parents so why not.

@7thLetter Then psychedelics are not for you. Psychedelics tend to undercut performance as they reveal the value of being over doing.

@Nahm I have tried making tea one of those times actually, but I had no idea what I was doing. I ended up eating the mushrooms because I felt like it wouldn’t work. Cause I literally just put it into some hot water and it seems like a waste to just drink the liquid while there’s still some psilocybin in the mushrooms.

You can't expect to take a psychedelic and not expect change. And with that can come confusion, doubt, and uncertainty, but its the process of growth.

Edit:

I have had low moods after a psychedelic for a bit, often because the psychedelic gave me a lot to ponder about; but I have also had high moods after a psychedelic. However it never turned into depression.

I say maybe just wait till your on vacation possibly.

But Enlightenment is paradign shattering as well.  I still recall my first Dark Night of the Soul and how brutal that was.

@Leo Gura I mean it all comes down to the timing. Right now isn’t the best time, but I would want to experiment with them even more at some point in my life to further my development.
