If you don’t get roaming charges, just use google maps as you go along. If you have limited data, then download google maps before you leave. Once you arrive, you can turn off cellular and still navigate with the downloaded google maps. And use WiFi at cafes and lodging for using social media and the internet.

@NoSelfSelf Practical stuff for things like backpacking, while navigating?

Or deeper metaphysical shit, at least in my mind.

Comms is pretty essential. Make sure you have 3G, some countries in Europe can be pretty funny about cellphone data use sometimes, although any Islamic terrorist probably knows the system well enough. Sometimes countrys won't be covered if outside of the EEC.

Travel light.

I always travel alone. You need a phone with internet access and google maps and actual small gps is beneficial in case you have no internet access. Also consult Reddit for apps that give out freebies in real world. Make sure you know where you are going exactly and what are the routes. Planning is essential especially if you go to less developed countries to avoid getting yourself scammed or robbed. Know the resources available in that country or city and amenities. enjoy

And of course Google Translate is your friend if you find yourself outside a touristy area in a foreign country.  That'll get you places.  Hostels and hotels also have business cards so you can use their address to help you with Uber, Grab taxi, and normal taxis

Getting lost is the most wonderful and memorable part of travel. That is where the miracle happens.

Indeed. But don't get Lost in Turkey or  India. I know relative who took his wife to honey moon in Turkey, who knew nothing about language and currency value purchase in turkey ,and his taxi driver who can speak english started  suggesting he become their guide in turkey and recommending a budget hostel for him with good location, and took him & his wife 2 hours outside Istanbul and my relative had no Idea what area was it and taxi stopped at gas station and called on my relative to come with him inside gas station, only for another guy who is friend of this taxi driver took off the car with my relative's wife inside it ,and the taxi driver pulled gun and forced my relative on the ground and stole his wallet and other criminals came beating my relative to unconsciousness. On his honey moon, he lost all of his money, his passport, his virgin wife was taken and raped and forced into prostitution for 5 months before the police along with interpol found her. He lost his mind and now going on and off from psychiatric hospital. Lesson to be learned: DON'T BE A FOOL. You always have to take people with you if you go to a third world country or research that country. You can go to Developed countries alone and be fine.

Get a Rick Steves guide if you're going to Europe.  Get a Pimsleur Conversational Language Course if you're traveling to place where English is minimal.  Do as much Internet research as you can before your trip on things you wanna do or might wanna do.  Kinda assume that you're not gonna be able to have Internet access where you're going.  That will get you keenly prepared.  Read up about the place you're going.  Review the information you'll need to know about history, art, culture, and architecture to appreciate where you're going.
