Does anyone do sprinting

4 posts in this topic

I started sprinting in high school for track but I wasn't good enough to run D1 in college so I started prioritizing other things in life. I still like to keep it around as a hobby though.

I see a lot of stuff about weightlifting/distance running here, but I'm curious to know if anyone sprints?

In my experience, it actually helps me be VERY present. Kind of like riding a roller coaster... except there's an element of mastery to it :P

Sprints are great, I try to do them at least once a week. They work all your leg and abdominal muscles and help develop your fast twitch muscle's oxygen efficiency and mitochondrial density. I am finding that they also build willpower because after few sprints, you need to push yourself mentally quite hard to do more because they are so freaking tough and painful. Sprinting is a furnace for calorie burning and is a great way to "shock" the body.

Beware though because hard activities like springing release a lot of cortisol and adrenaline and if you do it too often you may start weakening your adrenal glands. Also there is a lot of impact on knees especially for those who don't have a good technique, good shoes and who run on pavement.

A great alternative is uphill sprints, ideally on dirt surface up on hills somewhere.

Also agreed on the mindfulness part, it is like vigorous swimming, hard for mind to wonder when your body is in so much discomfort.

Absolutely. People utterly underestimate the sheer agony of longer sprints (200-400m) esecially if you do them on repeat. The burn is KILLER and it's very easy to give up. I love it!

Pavement is just awful, definitely go for a track if available.

I used to do hill sprints and sprints dragging a sled a lot as part of my conditioning but I hurt my foot about a year ago and haven't been able to start doing them again yet. I look forward to the day I can though!
