Useful skills to learn during the summer?

7 posts in this topic

I'm already learning an instrument and two languages. I'm not satisfied, though, I'd like some more useful skills to hone while I got more free time. Any ideas?

Social skills. I don't know what you're planning on doing with your life but it's more than likely going to involve people.

Fitness.  Fitness is wonderful.   It really makes you feel good and builds you at a core level.  Here's the ones I know about, and the benefits I've gotten from each:

Weightlifting

If you can get a broad chest or broad shoulders when you're in your teens, it carries over to adult hood, and for years you will have a broader chest and bigger shoulders that are just easily there.

Contact sports (Martial Arts, Rugby)

They get you out of your head, like meditation, but you develop a special core confidence.  It's really good for your hormones, you can defend yourself, you become muscular, gain strong endurance, and usually end up with a six-pack.  Chicks dig it.  And the people at the dojo are really cool and friendly.

Team Sports

These are just wonderful.  You develop a special bond with your teammates, you stay in shape, and later on, you can teach your nieces, nephews, children etc to play.

Swimming

Swimming gives you an excellent 'swimmers' body.  It's a great thing to do if you have an injury.  My 80 year old neighbor swims everyday, and he's in a healthy mood, good shape, and looks like he has another 20 years to go. His secret is that he has always done some form of exercise.  Meanwhile, the other 50-80 year olds have physically started to fall apart, and they're kinda miserable.

Running

Highly addictive.  Master the runners' high, and you'll just start buzzing good vibes wherever you go.

Yoga

It's cool. If you can master the breathing aspects during exercise, you're in for a special meditative reward... like, you get high as a kite.  But it's a discipline, and the flexibility takes a lot of work for most guys.  It's much easier for girls.

Get to know one self better. Notice your skills, pros, cons, your reacting to the world. Grow and cultivate more consciousness.

Work on building your discipline. This is one thing I've been thinking of lately which seems to separate someone the most from the people around them. A lot of people are held back from doing what is important in life because of their emotions. At times it could seem like people who don't put in the work that is required for building a healthy lifestyle or a project for example, are lazy, but instead maybe its because they haven't built up any discipline in their earlier years.

How do you develop your discipline?

This is a question I asked myself today honestly. I don't even think you can work on it directly but I think its a combination of many things. Gym, healthy eating, getting rid of temptations, waking up on time, sleeping early, reading, meditation, to name a few.

Then with discipline, you can pretty much do emotionally difficult things without resistance.
