Do Nothing Meditation.

10 posts in this topic

I'm doing this technique since 7 months for 25 minutes without missing a single day but my mind is telling me all the time that I'm doing it wrong and I am constantly, "DOING SOMETHING". Guys,  this is so frustrating that I feel like I should quit.

How I actually do it -

- Set the timer.

- Take 5 deep breathes.

- Tell myself, "Lose yourself and do nothing"

- Just sit.

- Thoughts and everything pop up. ( But I feel like I'm intentionally doing something but when I try to stop doing what I feel like I'm intentionally doing, I just can't stop it easily.

I don't know what's happening I feel like I'm doing it wrong.

Any type of tip will help.

Thank you!

"I gently pushed my hand into my pocket and pulled the last one out, it trembled at first and clung to my hand. "Go on, it will be ok," I whispered. Encouraged, it flexed its wings and I knew the time was right. It flew up towards the blue, blue sky and I looked proudly as it's made its way to freedom. The last of my fucks was finally given."

"whenever that confusion about what should I do with the practice arises...maybe, that wouldn't be bad time to do nothing"

@Hardik jain What exactly are you "doing"? Sometimes I think, but I just shift my focus to intentional breathing before removing that as a focus and just sit or lay down for the remainder of the time without moving. Eventually you'll learn how to let go and not entertain the thoughts. They'll come and go and you'll still be meditating. Stop trying to get rid of your thoughts and stop thinking you have to get results. The "weird" experiences come every so often and you can't anticipate it, but you'll see! Keep going!

You could also try guided meditations! I do that as well. I have all of the Headspace (app) recordings and I listen to Tara Brach at https://www.tarabrach.com/guided-meditations/

You are just getting aware of all you are doing, ego is all about doing and you are getting aware of it. This is what the do nothing meditation is all about.

Mind is kicking in because it doesn't like to not do and it tries to stop it by bombarding you with thoughts of doing and wrongness. Let those thought appear and disappear of themselves, it is perfectly fine that those thoughts appear don't resist there appearance. When you can sit with those thoughts without resisting them you will be doing nothing.

Quitting is exactly what your mind wants you to do. Good job meditating for 7 months with all these thoughts popping up! :)

@Hardik jain I had this same problem with this meditation before. Something that's really helped me is just remembering that there's no way to do this wrong. Just keep watching the thoughts the best you can. If you watch them without trying to stop them, they'll stop on their own. If you forget to watch and get caught up in believing them, then that's okay too.

Just remember that your primary goal is to simply observe the best you can. If you 'mess up', then that's just a lesson you can grow from, and that in itself is great for becoming more focused. If you're in a long term slump, then you will have even stronger focus and will be much more appreciative of your newfound focus when you recover.

So really the only way to do this wrong is to not do it at all, and it sounds like you've got some good momentum going with your practice! :D

Every meditation-technique gives you a unique view on yourself.

If one way of looking at yourself has been exhausted try a different one, look from a different angle.

Maybe try mindfulness or breating or even "strong determination sitting" , then after some time return to "do nothing" and see what changed...

Don't quit!

Your problem is that you have a judgment about your monkey mind. It is just another layer of thoughts, unconsciousness and its finest trick. What you can do when you notice a thought is here, just say "thinking, thinking, thinking" not having a judgmental attitude.

What I do also is labeling them by groups because they most of the time belong only to a few groups of worries... Love, politics, friends, family, work, household,... not judging, just calling them. Noticing without judging! You also add "thank you" to it.

"Thank you" and "I love you" are magic words that you can use anytime towards your ego during and after meditation. Criticizing is what is making your meditation pointless, but not noticing that you have the monkey mind! No worries everybody has this!

Your thoughts do not arise during your seating habit, they were here before also, you are just putting your attention on the process of thinking, you see that you can't control them, and you finally are noticing them! This is a good sign!!! This is meditation.

Good luck and keep seating!

Who Am I to judge? When I think I know, I don't know that I don't know.

"Things don't change when they are understood. Understanding reinforces the intellect (the ego). The seeker has to make room to the meditative state."

I am doing do nothing meditation too for a month now and i think is going pretty well

sometimes I have lots of thoughts sometimes I do not have too much but it is OK depends on what day have you been (because i do it in the evening).   Thinking you are doing wrong may be OK but i suggest you remember these 2 phrases and remind them when you have these feelings of not doing right

1 Let happen what happens

2 And when you have the INTENTION To move ATTENTION    drop that intention.

so it will be OK do not worry bro.
