The Vilification of Religion

5 posts in this topic

This guy made a great video critiquing the hardcore rationalist view of religion that many people like Sam Harris propagate. I watched the whole thing just now and I think he articulated very well what many critics of Sam Harris do not articulate well.

Hark ye yet again — the little lower layer. All visible objects, man, are but as pasteboard masks. But in each event — in the living act, the undoubted deed — there, some unknown but still reasoning thing puts forth the mouldings of its features from behind the unreasoning mask. If man will strike, strike through the mask! How can the prisoner reach outside except by thrusting through the wall? To me, the white whale is that wall, shoved near to me. Sometimes I think there's naught beyond. But 'tis enough.

One thing I will say though is that there is something of value in what Sam Harris says, in my view. The guy in this video takes the position that it's people and their pre-existing filtration system of reality that determines how a religion is interpreted. It is people who shape ideology.

And whilst I agree with this guy for the most part, I think there is something to be said about the fact that ideology can shape people. Brainwashing and psychological conditioning are significant phenomena.

The point is to realize that religion is just what happens when you try to spread mysticism to the whole world, but the world is largely undeveloped, so they fail to get it.

An ignorant person cannot help misunderstanding mysticism.

Just like an ignorant rationalist cannot help misunderstanding religion.

In all cases, the common denominator is ignorance. Which we are all guilty of in spades. So who is to blame?

Since all that exists is the Self, there is no one to blame but oneself.

You are God. You are Truth. You are Love. You are Infinity.

Religion has essesiantly the same Message. God exists, the Truth can only be found within, a self/soul exists and is immortal. All this can be experienced, it is not some mere beliefs. True religion can be found in mysticism, the Vedanta, spirituality. Most religion this days have been corrupted by the ego-mind. But the truth can never be corrupted, it stays the same and can indeed only be found by going withing, following the hardcore path of spirituality or mysticism.
