Does the pick up community exist because of society's lack of understanding in sex? Can one love without understanding sex?

I am sure you can love without sex. Those 80 year old couples are probably not so sexually active anymore. 

But then again people in their 20s/30s/40s have strong sexdrives. And there are two genders for a reason. To have sex and make babies so yeah. 

For me honestly, it doesn't matter how great everything else about the girl is, if the sex is not good it's not going to workout.

Pretty much. Altho the picture is more complicated than that. 

As a consequence of our american culture's puritanical and generally prudish religious conditioning, which makes it taboo to frankly discuss sex and sexual matters, and sexuality with regards to love and mating and breeding, in our family life and general life as young people we do not learn how to be sexual and sexy adults. 

Those who do pick it up more by accident and social class position than anything else. 

And at the same time that we can't talk about being sexual adults,, and have no way to learn how, we are surrounded in a culture that is still undergoing a major change in sexual dynamics and interpersonal dynamics, AND, we are subject to an advertising and media industry that brutally uses sexual signalling and messaging to manipulate us and condition our behaviors. 

The result is a large percentage of men who have obsolete or partial skills with women, and who have a cartoonized understanding of sex and women driven into their minds and bodies by the media.

To make it worse, males have a tradition of not talking to each other about sex and sexual matters. Women did not have that taboo, so they have been able to talk to each other far more deeply and effectively over the past 5 or 6 decades, passing along female lore about how to interact with men and get what they want out of teh interaction.  So, women are way ahead of men in that way; they have a shared lore about men that is more real and up top date than the much more scant shared lore that men have about women.

The PUA movement and businesses grew as it did because of the deep male need for some way to learn the new skills with women they needed.

Nowadays PUA has dramatically expanded and improved into a males-into-men and masculine development on all levels movement and businesses. Old style PUA is considered o0bsolete now.
