It is not a requirement.

One does it because of tradition.

The fact is that the posture is very unhealthy, sitting, in general, is very unhealthy.

Squat or half-squat stance (like in Peaceful Warrior movie).

Is not easy at first. I had 1 year of practice. It gets better and comfortable after.

Why Squat? One of the fastest ways to open root chakra and third eye.

For faster results and an advanced technique: look into your forehead with eyes open, until the retina and iris disappear into pupils and only sclera remains visible (the white part of the eye).

And if you can’t squat sitting on your knees is also just as an ideal position such as people in martial arts do :) Gets the blood flowing to the brain and the energy flowing freely.

@TheSomeBody

The posture should be steady and should be very, very blissful, comfortable. So never try to distort your body, and never try to achieve postures which are uncomfortable.

For the Westerners, sitting on the ground, sitting in padmasan, lotus posture, is difficult; their bodies have not been trained for it. There is no need to bother about it. In the East people are sitting from their very birth, small children sitting on the ground. In the West, in all cold countries, chairs are needed.

If you can be steady and comfortable in a chair, it is perfectly okay – no need to try a lotus posture and force your body unnecessarily. A posture should be such that you can forget your body. Whenever a posture is comfortable it is bound to be steady. You fidget if the posture is uncomfortable.

Huge fan of using a meditation stoolmaxresdefault.jpg

although I could see where not sitting on anything (via a squat as previously mentioned) could be helpful for root chakra gains hmm

Start with one leg and do stretches for full lotus you can search on youtube. Eventually do the other leg like you use the first one and they will both get used to the stretch and you will be able to do it much easier. I also suggest supplementing with MSM and Silica for more flexibility.

If your knees and spine hurt my friend it is somewhat related to flexibility. I suggested what has helped me hoping to help you too :) Omega 3 intake can help with joint problems and pain as well.

Full lotus requires lots of stretching. Many probably not everyone can do it.
