How To Disidentify With The Voice

69 posts in this topic

Have you done it?

I had a meditation today where I saw how sticky the voice in the mind is, it feels like its placed right where ”you” are. It even agrees with itself to make sure the feeling of ego is strengthened.

Whats the best way to disidentify with la voce? El diablo!

Dont look at me! Look inside!

Intense presence. Every moment of the day. Focus on something.

What was helpful for me is to repeat:
I am not the Voice.
The Voice is not the Voice.

Bearing with the conditioned in gentleness, fording the river with resolution, not neglecting what is distant, not regarding one's companions; thus one may manage to walk in the middle. H11L2

@Rilles A good thing is to ask your self "Did I choose this though, these thoughs?"

If you choose them(which you don't) then there would have been no desire to disidentify with them.

The very desire to disidentify is in itself a proof that "you" don't choose them, hence they don't belong to you. :)

Just remind yourself that the desire itself is the message that you don't belong to the voice, that you have nothing to do with it.

Thoughs, voices, egos or anything else can't have any ground, just see for you self with simple regression analyses. :)

Isn't it so, yes or no?

There's a presumption we carry that the mind is a troublesome battlefield and that achieving stillness or freedom from the inner voice is something to be fought tooth and nail for. The story goes that we should meditate for hours on end and maybe you'll have 2% more silence within... In actuality the mind is 99% silent at all times, but we're hypnotized by the 1%. The voice is like a small audio speaker in a huge hall and we're pressing our ear up against the speaker and wondering why there's so much noise in this place.

You wouldn't be ale to hear the thoughts if it wasn't for the tremendous pervading silence that all thoughts arise in. It's already mostly quiet. Would you be content if you could get your mind 99% quiet? Try meditating with the assumption that the vastness of silence and spaciousness that you'd like is already there and present. The voice coming up is just the 1%. Just by that simple realization, suddenly the hypnosis fades and the heaviness drops, and you don't even need to calm the 1% voice that you were focused on before. It's like a gentle chirping of a bird, and when the fixation and importance of it are dropped then the need to control it fades too.

@Rilles

During self-inquiry. I never used it as a mantra, but if that's what you do, you may have to try it yourself.
When I was in meditative state this pair of sentences would often produce big traction.

I let the voice go completly wild. It usually starts being agressive and vulgar. I actualy find it quite amuzing and interesting what new offences it will come up with. I let it completly loose and just forget about ever having the need to stop or disidentify with it. Strangely enough, by doing that it cannot touch me anymore.

This is a process that happens to me spontaneously usually, but can also be induced.

@okulele What about speaking out loud? Do you 'let' the voice out?

@okulele You do realize that it is the voice that judges itself to be obnoxious, do you?
It says things about itself when you say that it says something.
It even says that it doesn't let itself out to justify having two faces. The internal and external.

It can get pretty wild if you look at it detached.

Labeling is great. Just like oh there's a sound, there's a feeling... there's a thought. Treating it like any other object that arises in your awareness helps to disidentify with it.

And like @MarkusSweden put it, you haven't actually chose your thoughts. There isn't a thinker who is thinking the thoughts. No one is in control. Sam Harris puts it really well in the book Free Will: Try to choose your next thought. You might think "banana" (or in your case "cat"?). But you didn't realize you thought "banana" until you realized it. You can't choose a thought to think, as if you have access to the infinite thoughts you could think and you pick one. To choose what to think, you'd have to think the thought before you think it. So there is no homunculus in your brain to identify with.

Also I like to think about how each thought (like Leo's penny in that blog video) has infinite causes. Literally everything in the past since the big bang, all evolution on earth, all of your life's experiences and circumstances, your physiology genetics and environment, the present location and momentum and charge etc of every particle in the universe, possibly all of the particulars of the future (as we all know reality is more non-linear than Newtonian dynamics), and probably infinitely more causes... all of these led to this thought arising in awareness.

So where's the free will / thinker in that?

Also, I've found it helpful lately to let go of trying to control thoughts (which you can't, it's an illusion that you can), and let them do their thing and instead focus on feeling more.
