hearing voices and seeing stuff during meditaiton

27 posts in this topic

Today I meditated twice, and in both of those times, i had the following:

  • having thoughts that sounded like other people, hearing music and just hearing sounds. those thoughts were not of my control. for a few seconds i heared my name time and time again by different voices.
  • I also entered kind of a dream like state for a few split seconds here and there that seemed like im in a dream, like i was in some sort of story.

that stuff happened when my attention lowered from my breath, when i tried hard to concentrate on breath i didnt have anything. also since the first few sounds came up i started to notice them and when i noticed them they increased. i panicked a little thinking i have schizophrenia or something like that so the voices increased, but then i let go and at the end of the second session i was focused on my breath.

is that stuff normal? it has been happening just today, but a few months ago it was also present for a very few meditation sessions.

I smoked cannabis 2 days ago and had some dream-like "visuals" (not really visuals, more like imagination), it could be connected. also after my lsd experience I also had sort of a thing like that, imaginatory visuals and sounds, after the effects had passed. few months ago when i had a similar experience i didnt take any drugs.

Nah, that's not normal.

I wouldn't take drugs if I were you. Cannabis and other drugs can trigger an underlying predisposition for schizophrenia. You should look into exercise and Sarcosine.

should i go get evaluated?

@Viking Oh youve seen it! My guess its one of the side effects of deep meditation, youre going deep into yourself, weird things can happen, ive heard voices, heard pulsating noises ,heard bombs go off etc. Just keep meditating, dont get caught up. If you hear voices outside of meditation then go get yourself evaluated.

Happens when you identify with the mind.

@Viking What you describe sounds like your common hypnogogic nap.  A trance state that opens the gates to parallel realities.

@Viking When I was meditating at 1am with my bedroom windows open I could hear two distinct babies/infants crying outside at the same time. After 5-7 minutes of ignoring the sound I looked outside and stopped meditating. I live with only one neighbouring house, and I was 99% sure it wasn't coming from them since the sound didn't seem to originate from there. However, the sound quickly ceased for some reason and I can't figure out why I was hearing the sound. The neighbours don't have any babies, just a 5 year old son.

The sound of two babies crying seemed as though it was in close proximity, and since I ruled out the possibility it came from my neighbours, I think I was undergoing an auditory hallucination. Sound could have been coming from a nearby large garden which people who moved out own, but I don't see how this makes sense logically when I consider everything.

Hark ye yet again — the little lower layer. All visible objects, man, are but as pasteboard masks. But in each event — in the living act, the undoubted deed — there, some unknown but still reasoning thing puts forth the mouldings of its features from behind the unreasoning mask. If man will strike, strike through the mask! How can the prisoner reach outside except by thrusting through the wall? To me, the white whale is that wall, shoved near to me. Sometimes I think there's naught beyond. But 'tis enough.

@Enquirer you're right, human infant cries and cat cries can sound similar.

@Viking I wouldn't worry about it, like Leo says in his video. Weird stuff will happen, just keep on meditating. Nothing can touch you.

Haha how has no one besides you mentioned that? It's not schizophrenia!  Exploring hypnogogia can be really fun, but of course it should be a separate session then meditation.

Weird. I smoke all the time and never experienced anything like that. Maybe I'm just used to it already. Lol

I actually smoke weed too induce it. Much stronger within the next few hours after smoking, but once you get the hang of it, it can be induced easily without. I get full color cartoon or realistic images, landscapes, people, animals, etc, after weed.  Without it the images are much more murky and less colorful, unless in true hypnogogia right before sleep or right after waking up. No pot needed at those times

I will admit it didn't start until I took lsa (related to lsd). That was 2 years ago. But I don't think it's necessary, it just opened a door so to speak, but the door was already there.

Smoke a little bit and then lay down and let your mind run wild. Eventually you might get to a state of not controlling what you're saying, but not stopping what you are saying(talking about mind chatter) At this point you might slip into a stream of consciousness that is like a dream, but no visuals. There might be a story line playing out in your head, that if you snap out of it, you'd be like "Ok what the hell was that?" at some point if you learn to lean into that other stream of consciousness without snapping out of it, you might get sudden pings of images that sort of jump into your view (eyes closed of course).

Wow, that sounds pretty cool :)

I will definitely keep that in mind next time I meditate.

Thank you!
