Having smells trigger childhood memories lately....

8 posts in this topic

I don't know if it's the daily meditating that I've been doing this year or what, but lately I've had a lot more flashes of childhood memories pop fleetingly in and out of my mind during the day. They mostly seem triggered by or connected to smells, and they flash by so quickly that I don't have time to put a precise finger on the memory, like the where/when/who/what part of the memory. I'll maybe see a glimpse of a room I was in, an object, a feeling or a thought, but it's so slippery that I haven't been able to hold onto them long enough to analyze them.

Anyone else?  O.o

Yeah I'm very sensitive to smells and a whole bunch of my memories have to do with specific smells. If I randomly smell something it might trigger a whole memory-bank with old feeling-states and atmospheres I was in years ago. I don't think it's too important in any spiritual sense but it's a fun thing anyways. Sometimes it shows me how far I've gotten in life because sometimes those memories also remind me of the state of mind I was back then.

Smells have the most powerful nostalgia effect.

I know for me, I played a lot of video gamed as a youth, so the smell of those old school plastic manuals and cartidged and whatever really trigger my nostalgia.

I know a lot of my memories and childhood experiences that I've long since "forgotten" will pop up into my conscious awareness from time to time. I see this as a good thing, like my mind is trying to tie up loose ends that have affected me emotionally. The memory can be something as simple as fishing with my dad by the lake.

Yeah, it just seems to be happening a lot more than usual these days. Like I said, I'm unsure why, but wanted to see if maybe it was a common occurrence after doing a few months of personal growth pursuits.  *shrug*

I'm trying to not assign any real meaning to it, and it may very well just be because I'm eating, exercising and sleeping better.

Are many of these memories related to your ego-self?

A good way to access these memory, i.e., ego-self, is meditating. And one of the best "meds" for myself would be "Om mani padme hum"! ;)

Go deeper into the root chakra (the rabbit hole), it is connected to the sense of smell and security/fear.

Namaste, Mfks!
