Fear Of Turning Into A Vegetable

23 posts in this topic

Whenever I come across Enlightenment, I hear many people say you have to let go of everything. However when you let go of everything then doesn't that mean you literally stop thinking? I don't know about you guys but this sounds kinda scary and dangerous. I must have misunderstood this concept.

If any of you guys could give me some guidance it would be much appreciated! :)

It is said you will be scared because the ego doesn't want to die and makes you feel this way. I still feel it is a legitimate question to ask why you would want to undergo death of ego in the first place. Of course no enlightened person looks back and says they regret doing it; they can't because they no longer identify with what they once were, nor even know who they are afterwards. It no longer appears to matter. However, the fact that they can no longer see the world as they once did means that something is lost, and, in bliss, this fact they cannot appreciate.

@Olly You don't stop thinking. Your relationship to thinking changes. You're no longer dependent on thinking to solve all your personal problems. Thinking is no longer *as* important, so naturally your thought chatter drops significantly because you're not feeding it, but you don't stop thinking altogether.

True meditation/inquiry will give you the real answer to all this. :)

@Olly something like that happens to me when I'm meditating or doing self enquiry.its like I get to a certain point where I'm close to not knowing who I am then a massive fear takes over all my thoughts and body.its a bit off putting but I'm guessing its just thatcego afraid of the unknown

Funny how the ego fights agains consciousness. :D It's like when we label wealthy people as greedy, unkind men with hateful personalities. Not all rich people are bad people and not all enlightened people are monks who refuse every fun in life. If we wanna become one we need to like them and wish for their richness/awareness too. I think if one gets the idea of enlightment they can live their life normally but deeply they gonna be rooted in the stillness which makes their all life more enjoyable.

@Olly Hi, It's nothing like that. It's simply seeing things the way they truly are, without the mind coloring it's true state. The pure being in you becomes deeply connected with it's existence. I felt that way a lot as a young child. And it's slowly returning. Very cool!

"It sounds scary" This is just a thought ... what makes your thoughts TRUE? Thoughts are just stories aka maps about reality but not the territory.  Why do you believe the thoughts you have?  thoughts  are like stories and these stories are fabricated by the mind. A fiction . The stories are not real. They are just thoughts ... Have you asked yourself what a thought really is? What is a thought? KEY!

Imagine we did all of our Thinking through Sign Language. We'd be constantly using our hands to form the thoughts into signs. Now you stop thinking. And your hand is free to be used for real things. Because what is Sign Language/Thoughts but the Hand/Mind moving? When one stops the Signing/Thinking... the Hand/Mind is still there. What was lost? What was gained? Nothing. Everything.
