Habits For A Singer/Songwriter

17 posts in this topic

What are some habits that would be good for a musician singer/songwriter specifically? So far I have few but I'd like to see what I'm missing.

*Composing daily!

*Playing your instrument daily!

*Researching and listening mindfully to all types of music including music from other continents

*Mindfulness/Meditation

*Reading daily including fiction to learn how to craft stories and how to write poetically

*Writing lyrics daily! Very important to keep your creativity at its peak

*Practicing singing

*Learning music theory everyday and applying what you learn

So thats my list, I probably missed something, anyone got an idea?

@Rilles Freestyle.

I used to take 1h\1h30 to make a full song!

Now I can do one in 3 minutes!

@Ether Freestyling has its place sure but I prefer writing, its much more meticulous imo.

@Vipassana I use Pages to organize what I write, I have OneNote too but I haven't really learned how to use it properly yet.

@Rilles

Practicing creativity... Yes, it can be practiced.

Learning licks.

Improvising.

Ear training.

Refining your technique.

@Dan Arnautu Thanks man! All solid advice! Could you elaborate on how to practice creativity? It sounds like something I could really use!

deliberate practice not the same as practice but one of the most effective way to practice some studies shows that this is how you become world-class or a part of it, getting good at rarer and valuable skills and deep work :)

@Rilles There is a goofy, and very knowledgeable guy on YouTube I suggest. I think his name is Ken Tamlin, or Tamplin. Singing is all breathing. And emotion of course.

Record all the songs you write and ideas you come up with. Build a library of musical ideas.

Getting in touch with your inner feelings/emotions.

Beyond focusing on techniques or practice, know yourself at the core.

Embrace life, observe, love...

haha I pretty much live and breathe emotions so thats not a problem... but yes being mindful and going deeper into reality is something I want to work at and finding my authentic "self"
