Thyroid and Cholesterol

14 posts in this topic

Is it possible to have a normal level of the cholesterol and at the same time hypo/hyperthyroid problem?

@Leo Gura as far as I know you have encountered the thyroid problem.

There is some shit going on with my health, if you are curious details are here in the latest post. Symptoms look like B12 defficiency or thyroid problem, but my B12 blood test result is above 300 pg/ml and 200-900 is considered to be the normal range, or 500-1300 in some sources, which doesn't look like very strong deficiency, plus I have high levels of hemoglobin. My cholesterol is in the middle of the normal range. Can that vary a lot from test to test, depending on what you eat, how you sleep, what you do etc?

I'm doing the research and trying to exclude the things that doctors may not suspect due to their orthodox knowledge. In the state hospital they suspected bipolar and trying to exclude heart desease, kidney disease, neurological stuff and I'm appointed to all of that + ultrasound of the abdomine.

I have read in several sources that you have to exclude thyroid stuff before you get diagnosed with bipolar. I said that to my doctor and he was skeptical because my blood doesn't show anything significant in regards of the common analysis (slightly heightened lymphocytes) + creatinine (close to the upper limit) + cholesterol (in the middle) + sugar (close to the upper limit).

I'm trying to convince my parents to give me money to order the thyroid test, TSH, T3, T4, + antibodies, very occasionally I have slightly heightened body t for over 1 month that doesn't respond to antibiotics prescribed by my doctor, maybe there is an autoimmune attack on my thyroid.

I don't know all of the details, but from my own experience and tons of anecdotal evidence online (especially on curezone), iodine is amazing for thyroid health. And it is certainly a necessary nutrient for thyroid function and thyroid hormone creation

If you're interested, look into "lugol's iodine". A few drops of the 2% one in a small amount of water, held in your mouth for a while truly does wonders. It should taste a bit like pool water. For me, it works wonders on my energy levels, confidence, vitality etc.

Of course, a healthy lifestyle in general is crucial. Whole foods based diet, plenty of low intensity movement, sunlight, sleep, meditation and relaxation.

Additionally, extended fasts are perhaps the closest thing to a panacea in existence. Add some sunbathing and time in nature and it is sure to help. Again, do your own research here.

Good luck :)

@Privet  sorry to hear you are having all this trouble.

there is a glycoprotein called "intrinsic factor" secreted in your stomach that helps absorb B12. Have you had a history of gastritis / peptic ulcer / gastro-oesophageal reflux or something similar? Could be that your stomach is not producing enough of this. Generally the symptoms would be neurological things such as tingling, weird vibrations , random pain lacking stimulus...etc.

Regarding your thyroid, you can sometimes tell if it is hypo or hyperthyroidism. How is your mood overall and your energy levels? How is your weight balance? Iodine and Selenium both are important for proper thyroid function.

The issue could also be with your pituitary gland ( the middle man) or the hypothalamus (the manager of all endocrine function).

What are generally your signs and symptoms? Anything else like puffy face, nausea, loosing the lateral third of your eyebrows etc...?

@InfinitePotential I research all that fasting stuff at the moment, I fast for one day occasionally and I will experiment with a longer durations. I can't switch to whole food diet at the moment due to financial issues, but I have tried it before and it was great.

My B12 blood level is 300+ pg/ml judging by the test, doesn't look like very strong deficiency. I got 6 0.5 mg injections this week. I was diagnosed with subtle gastritis 3 years ago, digestive system is the next thing that I will investigate. I don't remember that my parents suffered from something related to digesting system.

I'm depressed every morning and can barely wake up if I don't sleep 8 hours. I'm very foggy all the time and can barely concentrate. I was getting more and more weak for the last 6 months. Mostly I'm exhausted and sometimes depressed, that's in a nutshell. I can't even meditate despite that I enjoy it.

I have lost over 10 pounds during last 2 weeks, unintentionally.

I have puffy half of face and loosing one eyebrow at the same side, but it's not very drastic.

My symptoms so far (when I had to call the emergency, it happened couple months ago and repeated a week ago):

  • Sense of cold and very wide tremor.
  • Very dry mouth.
  • Panic, psychosis, anxiety.
  • High blood pressure. (But typically it's slightly low.)
  • Before the onset of this I felt like I'm loosing consciousness instead of falling asleep, that feeling started everything.
  • Weak breathing.

Generally symptoms are:

  • Insomnia. I can't fall asleep early at night at all. Meditation, breathing exercises, physical exercise, being hungry, being full, waking up early at the same time for over a week - none of that worked so far. I may be absolutely calm and still not fall asleep.
  • Problem awakening. If I didn't sleep for 8 hours I almost can't wake up, I don't even remember how I switch off the alarm clock despite that I keep the phone on the table, not in the bed. I also experience negative self-talk (self-blame, guilt) every morning despite that I'm not depressed usually.
  • I become clinically depressed and have suicidal self-talk when I don't get at least 6 hours of sleep. Recently I skipped the job interview because the lack of sleep made me fucked.
  • I am exhausted and foggy and can barely concentrate. Lately I am so weak that I'm afraid to exercise, because of those emergency calls.
  • I occasionally have slightly high body temperature. Especially after meals.
  • I had 3 spasm-like diarrhea attacks for the last 2 months. Usually I have normal stool and sometimes a bit loose.
  • Cold arms and legs, they also easily get numb.
  • Tingling in my heels.
  • Variations and abnormalities in my heart rate. Sometimes my heart stumbles. Sometimes it's beats are too slow (beats type, not tempo), sometimes too fast, sometimes too strong.
  • Shaking of the regions of my muscles.
  • Uncomfortable sensations in my joints and muscles.
  • Bleeding gums. Especially in the morning.
  • Tinnitus. Ringing in my ears. Not drastic but quite present.
  • Tension in my head.

B12 level is 300+ (200-900 normal range). I just got my thyroid tests results: TSH - in the middle of the normal range, T3 - in the middle, T4 - closer to the upper limit, no significant amount of antibodies was found.

Possible reasons that are left:

  • Digestive system: wheat allergy, parasites, candida, autoimmunity.
  • Porn addiction withdrawals.
  • Porn addiction consequences.
  • Poor diet.

I have read that when you quit smoking you become prone to autoimmune disorders because the tobacco stimulates your immune system and when you quit it starts to attack your body. I quit 1.5 years ago.

@Privet holly cow, that is a lot of symptoms and signs. You definitely need to get a full scale checkup by cardiologist, neurologist and endocrinologist who know what they are doing. Potentially even have your bone mass checked by DXA as some of those might be signs of osteopenia.

What is your diet like these days or generally?

That's the problem. State doctors in Russia suck, my physician doesn't wanna talk a lot about my symptoms and just assumed that I'm a bipolar hypochondriac and didn't even want to send me to endocrinologist, full check in private hospital will cost a lot, and I'm too sick to even get a job to afford that. :S I'm trying to get the best out of this bunch of people with 30-year-old medical knowledge, they are probably already sick of me.

Buckwheat, rise, chicken, potato, tea. I have not much options at the moment.

Damn man....

Are there people such as naturopathic doctors or generally nutritionists where you live? People who are not medical doctors but have equally studied anathomy, chemistry etc but focus on more of the natural side of the health?

I am in second year of naturopathic medicine and if i was in your situation i would look them up as they would look more on the body as whole instead of addressing local symptoms and prescribing meds.

Also at the same time, if you can look into a book called "how not to die" from Dr Greger. I would even order it through Amazon even if it took 2 weeks. I think somebody in your blog already recommended that you go on more wholefood plant based diet however only you can make that choice. This book is a scientific collection of nutrition studies and there is research after research with people who reversed all sorts and stages of diseases.

Is there any chance you could be Celiac? Do you react to Gluten? ( in bread , whey, rye...)

@Michael569 The naturopath idea - I support, but I am unable to work and my parents won't invest in that "bullshit". I was planning to get a job and invest in my health, attended one interview (but didn't get that job), at the second interview my state worsened so much because of the lack of sleep and it still not improved despite that I slept well several times, I can't work at the moment. Plant based diet is potentially able to make me feel better to get a job, but the financial situation is the obstacle again, I depend on my parents in terms of food.

I'm thinking of giving a shot of the fasting pattern like 01110111 for 2-4 weeks, where 0 = water fasting, 1 = less than 1000 kilocalories a day. When I was in strict diet 3 years ago and ate <1000 kilocalories a day for over a month it gave me energy and clarity. But I'm not sure if this is a good idea due to the fact that I am so weak and unstable and there might be something with my digestive system.

Glutenwise - I am trying to figure that out, I didn't eat wheat for 4-5 days and ate it today to see if something changes.

I visited a neurologist in the state hospital. When I described the symptoms that happened before the emergency he assumed adrenal attack, he checked my reflexes and found nothing. I checked the diagnosis in the net and symptoms look very similar. But the treatment that he prescribed made me facepalm. He prescribed an antidepressant withdrawals from which look like an adrenal attack. >:(

Also I told him that I'm experimenting with the breathing exercises to fall asleep and he said that it can trigger the attack.

This adrenal theory looks very viable. I was a long distance runner for several years, it can make your body produce a lot of cortisol. I was a heavy porn addict for the last 4 years and quit it a month ago, it affects your glands as well, especially edging. Plus I had very neurotic childhood. All that might lead to an adrenal gland dysfunction. And that's something that Russian state doctors might not be very familiar with.

pretty much.. I mean they are amazing at treating acute ilnesses and injuries, hats down but chronic disease..not a chance. Just crisis management.

give it more like 30 days of all gluten. It takes a while to get all of that out. If you were a Celiac, gluten would wreak havoc because it completely wipes out the villi&microvili ( absorbtion area) from your intestinal tract so you get all the symptoms of lacking nutrition , lacking b12, anxiety, headaches, malaise, etc etc. I would not discredit this from your diagnosis. You could also be tested for this by immunologist.

can you negotiate with your parents to stop buying food for you and give you a food budget instead? Figure out how much does your food cost them and tell them to give you that mony on monthly bases. Offer to help out when you can (within limits of your energy levels) perhaps try to get some easy job such as newsletter delivery, at bookstore, library or something quiet..options are out there. Or at local school some admin position to cover your food bills.

No, my borderline stepfather thinks my disease is made up and I'm pretending, I could barely convince them to help me with the blood tests.

get some easy job

That was my strategy before I had to call the emergency. Last job interview was exactly for this kind of job and I had to skip it due to my state.

I'll try to ask another relative for help.

U don't eat any vegetables nor fruits? Odd

U need your 8 hours so I guess that means you need to sleep very early to get all hours. Have you looked on things that makes u tired? lower the lights, mindfullness, no super exiting activity before bedtime and such?

I do when I have them.

All you mentioned didn't work for me, I've tried all of that many times. I may even have some success with sleep for couple of days and then all of a sudden I can't fall asleep until sunrise two-three days in a row no matter how exhausted and sleepy I am.

The thyroid essentially regulate how the body grows. If the 5th chakra is less connected with the sacrum, then many problems arise.
