Studying Philosophy in College 2nd degree

4 posts in this topic

Hey guys,

I need some advice. I am currently getting my degree in business and I will graduate in 2018. I am thinking about getting second degree in Philosophy but that would mean that I would have to spend another 3 years in college.(in my country bachelor takes 3 years). I'm in a little bit of a predicament because it would mean that I would have to work (either get a job or starting my own business) + studying at the same time.

So my question to you guys is, do you think that studying philosophy at university is worth it? I am really interested in the subject but I also want to learn how to write and 'think properly' and I know that is the case when you study philosophy. I know that Leo is not a fan of technical jargon and it's not really a true philosophy but I think there is some value in taking some classes on logic, writing essays + spending time on contemplation etc.

I am really stuck, I have 6 months to decide. I really hate my college right now because its useless and I didn't enojoyed it at all and I am afraid that it will be the case when I decide to get 2nd degree (but in different school). I have few friends who study philosophy and they say its really great. But also I don't want to spend another 3 years in college but I would really want to get a degree. You can say a am a little bit romantic about having degree in philosophy and its true, but this is how I feel.

PS. I am 21 now + college in my country is almost free, so it is not about the money, but its about time that I will spend at university

I find that philosophy is a field best studied on one's own. Academic philosophy is really poor and not based on a search for Truth, but largely mental-masturbation and history.

Why not start your career/biz and study philosophy as a hobby on your own? That is really the best of both worlds in my opinion. Spending too much time in college is not good.

You are God. You are Truth. You are Love. You are Infinity.

I wanted to do the same after finishing engineering . .. . After some thinking i decided not to take a single step in an university anymore .. . . I just bought some book to read for myself . . . No pressure. ..  university comes down to just studying for the passing grades.
