But if you look more carefully - Can you really identify where ends your mental image and starts the visual experience?

It is just your mind which assigns certain meanings and distinctions between those two - based on your belief system. It says one is real and another one is imagination. However, neither of them is real and ultimately there is no distinction between those two.
