Commonplace Book Tips Needed

25 posts in this topic

What categories you use for you commonplace book? Do you prefer digital or physical book? What do you put in it? How often?

Read @Leo Gura's blueprint topic on it and I think this is something that I would really benefit from.

Digital is best because it will grow VERY large over time and you want search functions, categorizing functions, and formatting functions.

Microsoft OneNote is perfect.

I personally use a paper notebook but not for any particular reason

when I write stuff down I try to do it in a quiz form the reason why is that it support recall(and it helps to avoid the fluency illusion, fluency illusion is basically the illusion of thinking you know it but really don't it's actually recognizing) which is useful to improve memory and is also useful with spaced repetition (which is memorize over a longer period of time and a really use full technique for long term memory which is I think a commonplace book really can make a lot of use of because its likely you have it for a long period of time)

I usually just write in it after I have found something I thought was important to know or something i really want to know for a long period of time :)

Just installed OneNote to see what its like, but found out you can't store your files locally (i.e. on your hard drive) if you're on Mac. Not sure that i'd want to rely on OneDrive to keep all my notes etc.

@Space Of course I don't rely on any stupid OneDrive.

Just buy a copy of MS Office. It includes OneNote which runs on your PC/Mac.

You can buy older versions on Ebay if you want to save money.

@kieranperez I have dozens and maybe even hundreds of categories which are specific to my needs. Your needs will be totally different.

I use Google Keep and backup all my notes once a week by downloading them on my PC and on an external drive. For notes I use categories too.

Yea that's what I did but the Mac version (2016) doesn't let you store notebooks on your computer. All other Microsoft programs allow local storage, except OneNote. The only option is on a OneDrive cloud. Sucks!

@Space Then get an earlier version on Ebay.

I refuse to upgrade to Windows 10 because Microsoft are being assholes about it.

So I just found that apparently I already had Microsoft One Note. I upgraded to Windows 10 awhile ago because I haven’t taken 100% responsibilty with my knowledge of computer software...

So, what are some good basic categories worth starting with that some of you use on a daily basis that keep you on track with keeping it up to date?
