Choosing A Non Selfish Authentic Career.

8 posts in this topic

Something i've been contemplating about today, is about how does one choose a career or life purpose which is not selfishly orientated and at the same time an authentic one, when you are still identified with an "I" or a "self"?

In my opinion, if you look at it from the viewpoint of todays society, 99% of the people spend their lifetime doing jobs that are driven by the ego but also by limiting beliefs. If you are enlightened you wouldn't live this way, and go with the "flow" ending up at the most authentic and selfless job.

Just because there are benefits for the "I" doesen't mean that it is a bad thing, it can always be a win-win situation.
From a higher perspective the selfish jobs might cause problems for others, problems that trigger their expansion. Causing problems is a faster way of growth for the others so to say, so you are essentially helping them in the end.

I think that it's so much about the work you're doing but about why you're doing it. You can do seemingly selfish things for good reasons and seemingly selfless things for selfish reasons. Of course knowledge will help choose the path well regardless of your current level of awareness. Also when it comes to jobs or companies it might be better for someone looking to improve themselves to have the money than someone who would use the power very carelessly.

You can always choose a selfish career and put awareness into it. Take for example internet marketing. You can create scammy marketing campaigns and steal traffic from real scammers, then educate people accordingly to their level of consciousness. This way you won't make a profit as good as snake oil salesmans make, but you will be at least doing something meaningful. If you believe that increasing people's consciousness is meaningful, of course.

Sometimes I feel like scamming people on the internet is less selfish than producing and selling gadgets, because you are not exploiting Earth's resources while doing it. It all depends on perspective.

@Nahm but would they be doing this if they weren't "their" kids? :D

Many of us who are currently pursuing careers driven by ego , unconsciousness and achievement have mostly been indocrinated by parents and educators to do so. It is not inherently an evil thing, it just the way out society is built because none of these people know that it is possible to do anything else. It takes time to "wake up."

I've been working for a corporation for past 5 years but for 4 years I thought this is it, that nothing else could be achieved and that my whole life I'll be climbing the corporate ladder. Leo opened my eyes and afterwards many other conscious people. Now I'm spending majority of my conscious time designing a plan of transition to higher contribution profession aligned with my core values.

A career can be designed to serve both "I" and "them" to have a global or local contribution and to give something out to the world. Many guys and girls on this forum are proof of that, having their channels, coaching careers, education businesses etc.. But it takes a lot of pain to look inside and identify that a person is not aligned with their values, most people have no idea that there are things such as "core values" If these things were taught in the school, we would not be having global problems such as terrorism, global warming, wars, SSRI drugs and addictions

The best thing anyone of us can do is to share our skills and talents and help others to "wake up" and share something with the world. By not being just consumers but also creators and contributors.

Selfishness, there is a relative aspect to this, anything you do in life could be considered selfish from a particular point of view, so if you are trying to find the least selfish career, in a sense that is a selfish endeavor because "you" have a problem being labeled as selfish.  Why not just ignore the subject of selfishness and do something you're attracted to instead of judging yourself or others for what they do.

Maharaj ran a tobacco shop, tobacco is poisonous.  He was also enlightened, so I'd be careful about what you judge as selfish or not selfish, what's authentic, what's not.  Enlightened people aren't excluded from being selfish, on the contrary, the path to enlightenment can be seen as the most selfish thing in life, the most noble, or the most insane, it depends on which perspective you view it from.  If I feel authentic, I am authentic, if I wait for you to tell me I'm authentic, or this purpose is authentic, then it isn't.  To what authority do you obey in determining the judgement?
