All Pleasure Is Pain

2 posts in this topic

I once heard an enlightened master say: "All pleasure is pain."

Can anyone elaborate on what that might mean.

"Not believing your own thoughts, you’re free from the primal desire: the thought that reality should be different than it is. You realise the wordless, the unthinkable. You understand that any mystery is only what you yourself have created. In fact, there’s no mystery. Everything is as clear as day. It’s simple, because there really isn’t anything. There’s only the story appearing now. And not even that.” — Byron Katie

Pleasure is not the same as joy. It is  derived from entertainment, sex, alchohol, etc. Not from the inner peace that is the natural state of your being.

That said, all things materialistic are finite. If you attach yourself to something finite, you are bound to suffer since one day it will end. When you think about it like that, attaching yourself to something materialistic is insane.

In the depths of winter,
I finally learned that within me
there lay an invincible summer.

- Albert Camus
