I Really Wanna Concentrate!

9 posts in this topic

Hi fellas,

I am a teen and just gonna be 18 this april. I am a math lover and really really love to solve problems, specially in the "out of the box" manner. Now am gonna give various college admission soon. My main problem as the title suggests is concentration. I usually dont study a lot but i manage to get atleast 90% in crucial exams by last minute bashing. My skills are that am a fast learner, optimistic, never lose hope, tension free( even after i just managed to pass in chemistry i was confident that i could get atleast 70-80% marks and i bagged it through some hard work).

Now my bad skills are that  I cant concentrate much, not great at implementation( am good at this, much better than the average but i want to master this).

I seriously want to work hard( study for 10-12 hrs min) and get rid of my lack of concentration( i like spirituality and sexuality- the latter is what i wanna get rid of)

Also i dont want to get that 90% by last moment blast( am really not proud about that)...i want to work hard throughout so that i get 99% and then say that "i deserve this" with pride

So any help about improving my concentration is needed! Thank You

Leo gave some good reccomendations for focus, cut off all distractions, work in block time. 90 minutes, then a 10-15 min break, then back to it.

@Ranojoy Dutta You could also benefit from starting meditation. Just a simple breath counting meditation (you can find a bunch of videos on youtube about this). No special thing just count your breath from 1 to 10 .... you will probably lose the count in the beginning but for me my ability to concentrate increased noticeable after practising meditation for a while. Just 15 minutes per day or something like this ....

Establishing a meditation practice will definitely help improve your focus, and as others have said, schedule in your time on a block basis, have something to look forward to after work.

Meditation helps a lot in keeping focused , the one that helped me a lot in that was mindful meditation, you can find them searching on Leo's Videos.

What Truth said is correct, I am using the pomodoro technique

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomodoro_Technique

Study 25 minutes then break 5 minutes, after 3 or 4 short breaks, take a longer one like 10 or 15 minutes.

It helped me to keep focused, a lot.

As others have said, meditation works.

I think you should also keep in mind that your grades are a blunt instrument for measuring knowledge. Don't be too encouraged/discouraged by your results. They don't mean that much. Not to say you shouldn't care, but be aware of the endless knowledge out there. School is good,I think, but also very narrow and misleading.

i know grades dont judge, but u knw here in India grades are most important to judge someone. As am gonna go for knowledge in future, i need a suitable grade to get into the college i dream of. At the college level( for the particular college i wanna go) we r not judged by stupified exams. they have a different pattern to conduct exams on statistics and maths( my two fav subjects).

Yes i did meditation for nearly 2 months two years back, then which went off for some reason. I cant again continue from then. But one good news is that i now chant/ meditate 10 mins daily which is keeping me calm pretty much. I wl improve that later , not now due to exam pressure! thanks for ur help guys. I do pomodoro technique even before i knew it, coz i generally cant concentrate more than 1 hr! And anyone know how to boost my energy(besides meditation) as i feel very much tired after two tuition and a journey for 2 hrs? i get pretty much weakened by journey why i dont know because i am a good runner and have enough stamina. I really want to "absolute" myself and so am asking help one by one to improve myself!

thank you

@Ranojoy Dutta I know a bit about India. Have you considered moving to a different country?  I think you will find more intellectual freedom else where.
