What Is The Underlying Principle Behind Respecting Yogis And Masters?

8 posts in this topic

i see at a lot of retreat posts that one of the main rules is to not interrupt/respect/dont raise hand to ask questions etc. why is that so?

i mean, i understand why it would be mandatory for normal people, who would get annoyed, disfocused. but why is it so with people with great emotional mastery?

when I read the rules of retreats, I feel like people come there to praise the egos of the masters, like - "they're giving their own time to teach you for free so you should respect them", why would the masters care if i respect them or not? traditionally, respect is for people to feel good about themselves, I simply dont get that point.

why is it that i can ask my professor questions during the lecture but cant ask an "egoless" master a question during his talk?

Either they don't have a master as a teacher, or they just don't want negative ego's to keep seeking attention or they don't want them to be distracting themselves by continuing to play out their social games.

But there should be some space to ask questions I think.

I've met many masters and the only one where you couldn't ask questions was Eckhart Tolle. - at least as I remember. Also, you have to see what a teacher really is. It is not a person. It is you. The teacher points you back towards you and calls you towards you. From spectator mode it is really easy to misunderstand their function.

@Ilya When the master is teaching your only job is to be listening with a still mind and not be thinking of questions. If you listen quietly to every word spoken you should have no questions. Also, the master may feel your not ready to hear the answer to a question you may have asked. When your ready to hear they will tell you without you asking and not a moment before.

Anybody can ask the big questions, but not everybody is ready to hear the big answers.

It has nothing to do with their emotional mastery. It has to do with your emotional mastery.  Imagine if everyone in the group starting throwing their monkey mind questions at the master. Shit would get nowhere fast!

Do you really think that a spiritual master is in some way the same as a university professor? Or should abide by the same procedure of teaching that YOU expect? Spiritually is not a black and white, yes or no type of discipline. It's just not taught that way.

I'm certainly no master by any stretch of the imagination, and yet I feel that by answering your questions here I have done you a disservice in a way. I can see quite clearly now why those rules of silence are in place. I never really thought about it much before. But now that you've bought up the question, the answer has become quite obvious. And I'm sure if you would have thought about it without asking here, you would have come to the same conclusion on your own.

@Ilya It is to give the space for you to receive what an ego with a question is not able to.
