What Is Imagination?

Definition of imagination

1 :  the act or power of forming a mental image of something not present to the senses or never before wholly perceived in reality

2a :  creative ability :  ability to confront and deal with a problem :  resourcefulness use your imagination and get us out of here :  the thinking or active mind :  interest stories that fired the imagination

3a :  a creation of the mind; especially :  an idealized or poetic creation :  fanciful or empty assumption

 

Imagination is probably our ultimate tool for creation because we shape through seeing. Therefor it is interesting to learn more about it's essence: What is imagination in the context of self-development/awareness/consciousness? Do we imagine all the time or are there absolute heightened moments and moments where we do not imagine at all?

Where does the line fade between imagining  and perceiving normal visual reality? Dreams versus thinking ideas vs experiencing without thought? We characterize these as different states, not thinking, thinking, dreaming, but inherently these are actually all the same reality and maybe thinking or not thinking does not exist at all. For example you are never imagining or thinking, these are all part of reality itself, but you think you personally own those characteristics and define them as separate, but they are not?

How can we cultivate "imagination"? As number one tool for creation it might be handy if you want to create/envision your own future to learn how to increase the ability to imagine. Not only will it help in practical things, but it will probably also help with making the world more adventurous and colorful.

How are symbols/colors/sounds/tastes and imagination linked? Could we say that these symbols always induce the same imagination in the mind for many different people? How is this done? Any pro's or con's about symbolic induced imagining/thinking?
